World History & Geography

Course Description

This course will cover the origins and development of countries of the world from the 18th century to the present day. Specific units of study will include Unresolved Problems of the Modern World, Rise of Democracy, The Industrial Revolution, The Rise of Imperialism, A Case Study of India, World War1, World War 2, and the Cold War. Physical and Cultural Geography will be included to give students a geographical background from which these situations occurred.

These are the topics that will be covered in World History class this year.

Classroom Objectives

Unit 1---Map Skills

Topics covered include latitude and longitude, map scale, compass use, and how to read a legend.

Unit 2---Democracy

Topics covered include the Ancient Greeks, the Magna Carta, the Enlightenment, the American and French Revolutions.

Unit 3---The Industrial Revolution

Topics covered include Famous Inventors and Inventions, Important Products, Working Conditions, the Growth of Cities and the Rise of Capitalism and Socialism.

Unit 4---The Age of Imperialism

Topics covered include the Exploration of Africa, the Battle for Colonies, British Imperialism in India, a Study of Mohandas K. Gandhi.

Unit 5---World War 1

Topics covered include the Assasination of Archduke Ferdinand, the System of Alliances, the Sinking of the Lusitania, Trench Warfare, the Treaty of Versailles.

Unit 6---The Rise of Dictatorships

Topics covered include the Rise of Communism, the Rise of Fascism, Nazi Germany, and Important Leaders such as Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler.

Unit 7---World War 2

Topics covered include Causes of the War, Pearl Harbor, Major Alliances, the Holocaust, the Atomic Bomb.

Unit 8---The Cold War

Topics covered include The Berlin Airlift, The Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Korean War, The Development of Communist China.

Unit 9---Unresolved Problems of the World

Topics covered include Apartheid in South Africa, the Destruction of the Rainforests, Religious Wars in the Middle East, The Search for Oil.
