Region & All-State

Choir students have the opportunity to compete in Texas All-State and Region competitions. There are two different types of Region auditions - the Mixed Region (SATB All-State track) and Treble Region (SSA only, does not advance to All-State). Both Region events involve an audition in which a student will sing selections from the region repertoire in front of a panel of judges. The judges will provide constructive written feedback and assign a numerical score which results in a chair ranking for each student. Students who place in the top 22 chairs for Mixed or top 34 chairs for Treble will become members of the Region 29 choir, and attend an additional clinic with a distinguished clinician to prepare a concert with fellow Region 29 choir members. Mixed region students also have the opportunity to advance to the Pre-Area auditions if they are placed in chairs 1-10. The Pre-Area round has a similar audition process, involving more difficult repertoire, as well as sight-reading. Students who place in chairs 1-5 at the Pre-Area round will move on to the final Area round and compete against the top 5 students in their voice part from other regions for a spot in the Texas All-State Choir. Students who make it into the All-State Choir will attend the Texas Music Educators Association convention in February, where they will work with a world-renowned clinician for 4 days alongside other All-State choir students, culminating in a prestigious final concert.

Varsity Choir Students are encouraged to participate in the All-State/Mixed Region competition. Students will learn songs given in class to prepare for competition. Additional rehearsals will be offered after school to help the students learn and polish required music. 

• Beginning Treble and Intermediate Treble students may audition for Mixed Region and/or Treble Region.

• Beginning Tenor-Bass students may audition for Mixed Region.

• Varsity Treble students are encouraged to audition for Mixed Region and/or Treble Region.

• Varsity Mixed students are encouraged to audition for Mixed Region.

Directors will offer after-school sessions by appointment on the days below. Please sign up in person on the region rehearsal appointment sheet.

Week 1 (August 11 - 15): No rehearsals, first week of school

Week 2 (August 18 - 22): Look Down, Fair Moon 

Week 3 (August 25 - 29): Sednalo

Week 4 (Sept 1 - 5): Guadalajara / Stardust

Week 5 (Sept 8 - 12): Invitation to Love / Spark of Light

Week 6 (Sept 15 - 19): Crucifixion

Week 7 (Sept 22 - 26):  Review & Practice Cuts on your own (No after-school region rehearsals due to musical auditions)

Week 8 (Sept 29 - Oct 3): Review & Practice Cuts on your own (No after-school region rehearsals due to Musical vocal rehearsals)

Mr. Varville will offer after school sessions on Tuesdays from 4:25-5:10 for all tenor/bass singers.

Ms. Herrick will offer after school sessions on Tuesdays from 4:25-5:10 for all treble singers.
