Blanket-making parties are a great way to get kids involved in doing something for others! If you are interested in hosting your own blanket-making party, you could ask people to bring their own fleece, you could provide the fleece, or you could contact my dad (bhuebsch82@gmail.com), so we can get you some fleece to turn into blankets.
Here are some tips for planning a blanket-making party:
- Find a time that might work for a bunch of your friends and family. (We have done 1:30 to 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon and let people come for as long as they can.)
- Find a place where you can make several blankets at a time (your house, a church, etc.).
- Send out invitations two or three weeks before the party. (Facebook helps!)
- Get some fleece for the party. (Each family can usually make 2-3 blankets during this time. The kits that have lines for where you cut are the best for people who haven't made very many blankets.)
- Send out an instructional video to those who plan to come.
- Encourage your guests to bring fabric scissors, and plan to have three or four pair on hand.
- Plan for snacks and music.
Here are some tips for during the party:
- Make sure each blanket has an adult to be with any kid under 10 years old.
- Make sure the cutting is done by someone who is 10 years old or older. Kids who are ages 6-9 are usually good at tying the knots.
- Encourage the young kids who don't want to make blankets the whole time to hand out snacks.
