Waples Mill Strings 2020-2021

Strings Parents: This is your one stop shop for all things pertaining to Strings. If you can't find it here do not hesitate to email me at ccbonanno@fcps.edu. I will be happy to help in any way I can!

STRINGS OVERVIEW

  • Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 can participate in Strings.

  • Strings is a graded class and a one year commitment.

  • Students can choose to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass.

  • If considering the cello or bass , think about how it would be transported to school if we return in person at some point (basses are generally not allowed on the bus, but you may ask your bus driver if they will allow a cello).

  • Classes will be taught synchronously for 30 minutes once a week. Students will NOT miss any academic instructional time.

  • Students do not need to have any musical experience or knowledge. I will teach them all they need to know!

  • Fun Stuff: Students will be given the opportunity once a month to participate in our Strings Cafe Nights. These are informal, fun musical gatherings where students can perform, listen to Mrs. Bonanno perform, or just hang out and listen to the music!

HOW DO I GET AN INSTRUMENT?

  • Music Store: This is a popular option! Music stores can provide quality instruments, repairs, and even curbside service or online rentals. Some music stores are offering free music tuning throughout the school year! This is a huge help during distance learning. Check out the following stores to help you get started (FCPS does not endorse a specific store).

  • County Instrument Rental: If your child needs financial assistance then they can receive an instrument (violins and violas only) through FCPS for $20 a year. Check "County Instrument Rental" on the registration form if interested in this option.

  • Already have an instrument at home? That's great! Remember that size and quality matter. Check with Mrs. Bonanno to make sure it will work for your child.

If you have any questions about obtaining an instrument please contact Mrs. Bonanno!

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT

Instruments come in all different sizes to fit your child. Mrs. Bonanno's advice when choosing an instrument is to base it on the pitch/sound of the instrument. Check out the following videos of the 4 instruments offered:

HOW DO I TUNE THIS INSTRUMENT?

Here are tuning videos you can watch with your child that may help in tuning their instrument. Another option is you can take their instrument to Day Violins (and other local music stores are doing this as well..) for a FREE tune-up!
