For 30 years Scott and I enjoyed our Morgans and our Belgians - breeding, boarding and training our youngsters - but we never seemed to have enough time to really enjoy them. There was just so much manure to shovel, hay to make and semen to ship. But, each year, we managed to sneak in at least one camping trip with our trail horses. As most, we started out with a 2 horse trailer, camping in a tent or leanto with portable fencing, progressed to the gooseneck with a sun shower, a mattress tossed up in the nose and portable corrals, and, finally, to a 4 horse with living quarters.
Again, like most, we stuck pretty close to home, at first, then wandered but always ended up back at Otter Creek. The 5 hour trip seemed shorter and shorter every time and each vacation was worth every minute.
Eventhough the riding opportunities on the lower trails of the Otter Creek Trail System never got old we were disappointed that we never seemed to get much time on the upper trails, which involved a full day's ride up and back. Three years ago we found the perfect property, right off the upper trails and next to friends from Vermont!
Friends in Low Places (outside of Lowville ha ha) was set up for our crew with 3 trailers and 7 horses.
This spring we bought the PERFECT Otter Creek camp, on 14 acres , backed right up to the Independence River Wild Forest and the Adirondack Park. With vivid memories of soaked sleeping bags, lukewarm sun showers, cooking over a campfire, and temporary fencing, we decided to create the place that we used to dream of - an affordable spot with a safe stall for the horses, a hot shower, a warm bed, a full kitchen and plenty of space to hang out as a group, watching a movie, cooking some popcorn and playing a game. I hope we have succeeded.
And, finally, a name ...
Wandering Pines - because all who wander are not necessarily lost. And we most certainly are not lost. We are home.
