History of
41 Lawrence Street (1890-1891)
MSI 12/26/20
1887 In 1887, the Lawrence heirs sold Lot No. 30 of the Lawrence Estates to Watie A. Bixby for $630 (MLR 1797/573). This is the lot on which No. 41 Lawrence Street was built.
1890 In February of 1890, Bixby sold the lot to Sarah E. Wellington for $630, and nothing was said in the deed about buildings (MLR 1958/39). Then, in September of 1890, Sarah Wellington took out a mortgage with the Waltham Savings Bank for $2,600 (MLR 2000/235). The deed did not specify the lot was "with buildings", but it did specify the buildings must be kept insured. According to the 1891 annual listing of voters, Ernest Wellington, a Watch Factory employee, and James Wellington, a janitor, lived in the Wellington house on Lawrence Street, but lived elsewhere in 1890. Therefore, it is probable that the house at 41 Lawrence Street was built 1890-1891 for the Wellington family. Ernest went on to become and engineer and then work at the hospital, but continued to live at 41 Lawrence Street into 1921.
1922 In 1922, Ernest and James Wellington sold the house to Frank E. Deffley (MLR 4509/489). The mortgage on the house had been assigned to Ernest Wellington in 1911 (MLR 3624/371), and it was foreclosed by him on Sarah Wellington's estate just before the sale to Deffley (MLR 4509/489). Frank was a bank teller, and his wife, Grace, was a bookkeeper. They lived in the house until 1927.
1927 Grace Deffley sold the house to Richard and Mary Gibbs in 1927 (MLR 5069/333). The Gibbs were an elderly couple and only lived there into the 1930s.
1935 In 1935, Mary J. Gibbs sold the house to Edward and Elizabeth Duggan (MLR 5921/119). Edward Duggan was a plumber, and, according to voting lists, the Duggans lived there into the 1950s. By 1955 they were joined there by Elizabeth Sullivan, although her relation to the Duggans is not clear.
1960 In 1960, Edward Duggan and Elizabeth Sullivan transferred title to the house to just Elizabeth Sullivan (MLR 9600/224 and 225), and Elizabeth Sullivan continued to live there into the 1990s.
1992 In 1992, the heirs of Elizabeth Sullivan sold the house to Patricia A. Sands (MLR 22001/296).
