“Mapping pedestrian comfort using remote sensing and GIS for a healthier city.”
WalkSense is an interactive tool that uses satellite imagery and geospatial data to evaluate the walkability of roads across Iloilo City. Our goal is to empower residents, planners, and local authorities with data-driven insights to improve pedestrian safety, comfort, and urban greenery.
Iloilo City is often cited as one of the most walkable cities at night, with streets that feel safe and accessible after dark. However, pedestrian comfort during the day is less understood. Factors like heat, sun exposure, urban greenery, and built-up areas can make daytime walking uncomfortable or even unsafe. Without detailed, spatially-informed data, it’s difficult for city planners and residents to know which streets are truly walkable throughout the day.
Here at WalkSense,we want empower Iloilo City residents, planners, and visitors with actionable insights on pedestrian comfort and road walkability. By leveraging remote sensing and spatial analysis, we aim to identify safe, shaded, and accessible pathways, promoting healthier, more walkable urban environments for everyone—day and night.
Key Features & Highlights
Interactive Walkability Maps:
Explore roads across Iloilo City with dynamic maps that evaluate pedestrian comfort using NDVI (vegetation density) and NDBI (built-up areas). Our system highlights how greenery and urban structures influence walkability, allowing users to visually identify the most comfortable routes.
2. Road Ratings for Pedestrian Comfort:
Each road is assessed and classified into three intuitive categories:
🟢 High Walkability – ideal for pedestrians, shaded, and comfortable.
🟡 Moderate Walkability – suitable for walking but may have some urban heat or lack of shade.
🔴 Low Walkability – less pedestrian-friendly due to heavy urbanization or minimal green spaces.
3. Customizable Layer Options:
Users can toggle multiple layers to enhance the map’s insights, including:
NDVI: Visualize vegetation and green cover.
NDBI: Highlight dense built-up areas.
RGB Satellite Imagery: Get a real-world view of the city.
Public Facilities: Display key points such as hospitals, schools, and markets to plan pedestrian routes efficiently.

4. Time-of-Day Analysis:
Walkability is not static! The map accounts for Morning, Noon, and Afternoon periods, reflecting variations in temperature, shade, and pedestrian comfort throughout the day. Users can see how the walkability of roads changes depending on the time, helping to plan the most pleasant walking experience.
5. User-Friendly Interface:
Designed for residents, city planners, and visitors alike, the app provides simple navigation, intuitive controls, and clear legends for easy interpretation of road ratings and environmental conditions.
