Games for students to practice their math skills leads to deeper connection and provides increased opportunity for intrinsic motivation.
Students have been using Book Creator demonstrate their understanding of both informational and narrative structures
Here Declan demonstrates understanding of plot, personification and character development.
Landon's One Pager is an example of a short assignment that demonstrates a lot of standards and concepts. Landon has demonstrated understanding of Plot, Figurative Language, Theme and Character Analysis on just one page!
Jack's Math Check out gives him an opportunity to reflect on his learning. Using the math practices as the metric to evaluate himself helps Jack see himself as a mathematician.
Adding Fractions with unlike denominators can be a challenging math concept to understand. That is why it is especially important to use manipulatives. Students need to have an understanding of these values so that they can use the procedure of finding common denominators with understanding.
Izzy is demonstrating understanding of unit fractions. Once students gain a greater understanding of the value of a given fraction then they can use it flexibly to solve problems.
Cody's draft of a Narrative story is a great example of how to include all the required elements in a short piece of writing. Stories do not need to be long, they only need to include... a PLOT, THEME & FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
This screenshot of Landon's post on Padlet is a great example of using everyday items to model fractions. Landon cut his pizza into fractions and then posed a question to his classmates requiring them to justify their thinking.
Declan's play dough fractions! This kinda of hand ons play will create a deep understanding of the value of fractions.
Zelly represented equivalent fractions and decimal understanding with models. Drawing and modeling like Zelly & Declan's is a necessary to understanding the concept of fractions.
Izzy demonstrates the ability to compare and contrast
Distance Learning and In person learning.
Eleanor demonstrates that she understand that 7.13 is 7 13/100. It is important for the students to read decimals as they would fractions. When students read decimals using the word "point" (seven point one three) it loses the value communicated by the place value word hundredths. Encourage your child uses the place value words when reading decimals.
Declan's stop and jots for figurative language are a great example of what is expected for reading comprehension for 4th and 5th grade. Students must be able to demonstrate understand plot elements (what happened in the story) AND author's tools such as figurative language.
Aden's modeling of 20 x 20 is an example of a student derived strategy to solve multiplication. These strategies ensure that when the students use the standard algorithm the are understanding the concepts behind the procedure.
Charlie's strategy for solving 3 digits by two digits probably looks different than the way we were taught. This way of solving shows number sense and deep understanding of place value.
Each week the students are assigned "Stop & Jots" from Front Desk, the novel we are reading as a class. This processing activity gives students the opportunity to respond to questions in writing. Asking students to think and write about what they are reading promotes retention and comprehension.
Each week the students are assigned a "Brief Write" a quick easy writing exercise. This practice of writing skills will help them develop as writers. Brief Writing and Journaling will build writing stamina, offer an opportunity for self expression and low risk entry point to practice new skills.
Student made rainbows over composite numbers to identify the factors
(4 x1) + (5x1) + (2 x3) =15
