So our first trip to walk the Wales Coast Path was a drive to Flint, park up at the train station and catch the train to Chester, the plan is then to walk back to Flint. This should take us around 13 Miles. The video below is from the second part of our trip and marked as a blue line on the map on the homepage which I used on my phone once we arrived in Chester at about 8am. We made our way to the start point on foot (Details on the previous page) to the official start point of the Wales Coast Path trail. This is marked by two stones, one each side of the path. We stopped nearby for a little 10 minute break on a bench before continuing a long straight riverside walk. Heading for Jubilee Bridge, we could see it in the distance but it seemed to take a while before it was within our reach, crossing the bridge taking in its big cogs and mechanics and then finding the path again on the opposite side gave us the chance to explore some old relics from the second world war, in the form of pillboxes, although now filled in, it was nice to see them close up, then on to Connah's Quay to be greeted by views of a much wider River that was filling up by the minute and the impressive Flint Bridge, we had seen many birds along the way, witnessed a seagull pluck out a large flat looking fish from the River which it threw onto the sand banks for lunch, the bore tidal wave, and many cormorant birds flying close to the water. We then had to leave the River and follow roads for a Mile or two, but we were greeted with fleeting glimpses of the Estuary every now and then. Just before Flint we left the roadside for Flint Marshes. The ever growing Estuary was now back alongside us but a distance away across the marches, we headed the last stretch of this part ended up in Flint and stopping at Flint castle which we made time for a quick exploring visit.
From the start point the route follows the River Dee, beginning with a long straight tarmac riverside path to Jubilee bridge, Onced crossed its across the grass for a short while up to the next river bridge. which carries the Chester Greenway across the river, an old railway line converted to a pathway back to Chester and beyond, and leaving to the left here it's just a short walk to Shotton Railway Station. Continue through the bridge a short way along the tarmac path of National Cycle Route 5, just after the milepost marker bear right onto the grassy path at ///nosedive.weeps.stall to stay on the coast path, keep bearing straight until you can no further as you arrive at the small brook leading into the Dee, follow the path around to the left and a short way rejoin NCR 5 where you turn right and cross the brook via the bridge. ///manly.alarm.though As you cross the bridge, then bear right at the fork and follow the path around to Connah's Quay. Pick up Dock road and at the end of dock follow the road around to the left, then right then at the sharp left bend turn right onto Quay Lane. Taking the second path to the left ///allowable.robots.destroyer immediately before the old inn, before passing under the bridge turn right. Follow this path up where you will get views of Flint Bridge before it turns left and crosses the railway line and leads out onto Dee View Road, cross the road and take Rock Road opposite, at the main road turn right, and follow this road for a while, eventually there is a pedestrian crossing ///fists.marsh.broth Cross the road and turn right continuing in the same direction but on the opposite side, stay here until you reach a roundabout,, crossing over the road just before, you need to make your way underneath the flyover and turn left at the second roundabout onto the pavement on the far side of Kelsterton Road. ///booms.objective.wisely Continue around and a short way at the fork in the path by the houses bear right ///head.limp.eruptions Follow this path up the road until the road takes a sharp right turn, on the bend just before it crosses the railway take the path bearing straight ahead on the opposite side of the road that leads down away from this road. ///flats.wobbles.hoot Continue down this path as it leads down to the main dual carriageway that you crossed under at the two roundabouts. As the path runs alongside the A548 Chester Road continue ahead. Keep going for a while, the dual carriageway turns to a single carriageway, stay on the same side pavement even when the cycle route prompts you to cross, eventually you arrive at a roundabout, you will need to go right/straight ahead, keep to the pavement ahead ///molars.seriously.eyepieces and go straight at the roundabout, now onto a continuation of Chester Road, stay on the pavement eventually passing The Yacht Inn ///blotting.elastic.applied and then a short way along look for the signpost for you to leave the road and turn right signposted Dee Estuary ///internal.shook.takers Turn right and follow the path a short way to the railway crossing, cross through the gates when its safe to do so. On the opposite side bear straight ahead. ///octagon.mainland.communal and pass the water treatment facility on your left hand side. When prompted follow the sign bearing left. This section can me muddy, follow what looks like the pathway, picking up walking boards and a couple of wooden footbridges along the way. ///doubts.sediment.fragment > ///indulgent.drives.thanks > ///outfitter.earl.chilling > ///balloons.exotic.combos > The path leads to a gate and then a better path network emerges. ///leopard.slowness.trips Continue straight a couple of Metres and at the crossroads turn right ///pink.farms.sheepish Follow the path passing a viewpoint on your right until it leads out onto a tarmac pathway, turn left here and follow until it leads out at Flint Castle.
