Scholarships & GRANTS
Scholarships sent to the school will be posted here and sent by email. Typically, WAHS begins to receive the most local scholarships in the Spring.
FAFSA - START HERE!
The FAFSA- or Free Application for Federal Student Aid- is a free federal application to connect students to financial aid. Typically it is most largely associated with the need-based federal PELL grant. This application is also used for many other grants and scholarship programs, as well as a requirement to complete to be eligible to receive federal student loans. It is recommended that all graduating Seniors who plan to pursue post-secondary programs complete their FAFSA, even if you do not think you will receive any grant money. It is not uncommon for people to be surprised that they do qualify for some aid! Additionally, the FAFSA needs to be completed prior to each year that you plan to attend school. It opens October 1 of each year for the following aid year.
For current 2024 graduating students, they will be completing the 2024-2025 FAFSA, as you complete the FAFSA based on the academic year that you will be enrolled in college. The FAFSA is undergoing changes this year. While it normally opens each year in October, this year, the 2024-2025 FAFSA opened on December 31st, 2023. See below to get online help and/or to get in person help at ACC.
FAFSA
Both a student and parent will need an FSA ID. This ID is important as you will use it year after year.
Create the FSA ID and Complete the FAFSA at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
It is highly recommended that you receive help in completing your FAFSA if you have never done it before or if you have a complicated situation.
ACC is a wonderful resource for getting in-person help with your FAFSA! They offer both weekly workshops and one-on-one sessions. View more information here.
CFNC.org has many different FAFSA resources, including step-by-step videos!
Of course, the StudentAid.gov website where the FAFSA is housed is full of information and help along the way
Deadline: Rolling but priority deadline for some universities varies, such as March 2, or July 19th for some community colleges; some aid is first-come, first-serve so applying earlier is best; also, you may be selected for verification at the schools you apply- which means you will be required to turn in additional documentation or complete additional forms, so completing the FAFSA earlier (and correctly!) may help you get thru this process in a more efficient and timely manner.
Local/Civic Scholarships
A lot of the scholarships we post are local and/or civic scholarships, meaning the pool of applicants are usually smaller and you have a better chance of receiving the scholarship! Not all local scholarships come to us, however, so be sure to check with local places you may receive a scholarship from, such as your job, your church, a community club or organization, or even places in which your parents or grandparents are involved. Get creative and ask around! You never know who may be providing scholarships.

Thanks to the generosity of many donors, numerous scholarships are available to eligible student-athletes of NCHSAA member schools.

Institutional Scholarships
Institutional scholarships come directly from the college or university that you wish to attend. These are usually posted on their websites, and they will often say how they grant them. They are usually granted one of two ways:
either granted automatically based on certain qualifications (ACT, GPA, minority status, financial need, region, etc) or
a scholarship portal with both a general scholarship application and individual scholarship applications
This varies from institution to institution so learn how the colleges/universities you are interested in do things! Don't be afraid to reach out to the college reps for help!
UNC Freshman Admission Requirements & Scholarships
Please utilize this amazing resource created by our very own Mr. Suttles to help our students easily navigate the admissions requirements and institutional scholarships at each of the UNC System institutions. Scholarship Tips
When it comes to the scholarships:
pay attention to exactly what they are asking,
do exactly what they are asking,
do exactly what they are asking by the deadline.
Your amazing application can get thrown out simply by not following directions!
The essays, when they are included, are an important component. They may be the only chance to show them who you are and what sets you apart. If you can try to make your essay stand-out, make it personal, and/or make it different, then you have a better chance of winning. Above all else: make it personal to you!
Essay reviewers read so many essays that it is vital to make the essay stick out in their mind so that they will remember yours and want to give you the scholarship. Compelling stories are key. Using active voice, instead of passive voice, is critical; saying things like, "I earned a 4.0" instead of "I have a 4.0". This reads much differently. Do you get to choose from essay topics? Choose a topic that you don't think as many others will write about. Don't go with your first choice, unless you know you can make it truly unique and compelling. Likely, your first choice is many other writers' first choices, as well, so the reviewers will be reading a lot on that topic!
It is important to have multiple people proofread, proofread, proofread your essays and your scholarship applications before submitting them. This will ensure you have a better chance of submitting a quality application!
If it asks for letters of recommendation, you need to ask people who know you well and will give you a glowing and personal recommendation. Try to give those writing recommendations for you ample time to submit your recommendation so that they are not rushing to complete a rec for you. Likely, this will not be their best work. If you need Counselors to give you a recommendation letter, please ask your counselor at least 2 weeks in advance. They may have a form for you to complete or want to have a meeting first.
Remember to go back and thank those who took the time to write recommendations for you!

These scholarships are past due and no longer valid. They are kept here for reference only.
