My name is Kate Wages, and I am a senior Music Education major with a Psychology minor at the University of South Carolina. Currently, I am finishing up my Teaching Internships at Chapin High School and Dent Middle School. Here I have seen all of the things I have learned in practice, from psychology courses to instrument methods to education classes. I am using the experiences gained throughout the past four years to pursue Graduation with Leadership Distinction in the Professional and Civic Engagement Pathway, because I want to reflect and share my experiences and growth.
My time in college has been filled with community service, leadership opportunities, and involvement in many different organizations. I am a proud member and leader in South Carolina Teaching Fellows, the National Association for Music Education, and Sigma Alpha Iota. I spent two years working on campus as a Resident Assistant and helped build the Music Living and Learning Community. When I am not on campus, you may find me working with a local high school band, teaching oboe lessons, creating art, or traveling to volunteer somewhere new.
In this ePortfolio, I have demonstrated the most valuable lessons taken away from college and a project to bridge the gap between my future career and collegiate life. I speak about my lessons learned from the classroom and beyond and how they have shaped my beliefs as a teacher and human being. I hope to inspire other young teachers and musicians to share their experiences with everyone they see, help everyone make music, be empathetic, and serve others. Next year, I will be teaching band at Clinton Middle School in the upstate and am excited to implement all that I have learned throughout college.
