Gala dinner

Aux Anciens Canadiens

The Gala dinner for the conference will take place in the Aux Anciens Canadiens restaurant at the heart of the Viaux Québec. The restaurant is known for its «Cuisine traditionnelle québécoise + nouvelle cuisine canadienne».

A bit of history (see restaurant web site) :  The Aux Anciens Canadiens Restaurant  is located in La Maison Jacquet, reputed to be the oldest house in Quebec City and one of the oldest in the province. It was erected in 1675!

It was even said that the Marquis de Montcalm (1712-1759), after having led the French troops against the English soldiers of General James Wolfe (1727-1759) during the battle of the Plains of Abraham which took place on September 13, 1759, died the next day in this house.

This original lot is one of the few to have retained the specific characteristics to the urban residential architecture of New France, despite the successive renovations and enlargements that have been made there. La Maison Jacquet will know different owners over time, including John Williams, inventor and first black barber (considered as well the first black-owned institution) in Quebec City! He is considered one of the most famous men of the region in the 19th century. He worked there for nearly 50 years with his brothers. The establishment will finally be classified as a heritage building in 1957. The restaurant « Aux Anciens Canadiens » is named in honor of the novel written by Aubert de Gaspé, also one of its owners, a novel inspired by the habits and customs of seigniorial life at the end of the French Regime.
