Greetings! My name is Omar Saucedo, and I'm an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech.

My area of research is Mathematical Biology with emphasis on modeling infectious diseases. In particular, I am interested in determining what factors impact the spread of infectious diseases using mathematical tools. Over the last years, we have observed a rise in infectious disease outbreaks ranging from Zika to Covid-19 to the recent cases of avian influenza in dairy cows. Epidemiological models have served as a fundamental tool for providing valuable insight towards disentangling disease transmission and capturing the changing dynamics of biological systems. My goal is to understand how infectious diseases propagate in a population and discovering what factors drive transmission, which is important to construct an effective control strategy to mitigate and prevent the next outbreak.
