The VT Cardiac Kids are teaming up with the AHA to help pass into law Cardiac Emergency Response Plans at ever school in Vermont.
Surviving cardiac arrest shouldn’t be based on luck. That’s why we’re launching a campaign to require cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs) for schools and athletic events in Vermont. More than 23,000 children experience a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital and nearly 40% of these are sports related. As we saw with NFL superstar Damar Hamlin, a blow to the chest in sports can cause a cardiac arrest.
Sadly, only 10% who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest out of hospital survive. But having schools and school sports venues prepared with lay responders and a cardiac emergency response plan can double or even triple survival rates.
CERPS can be stand-alone guidelines or merged with a school’s existing medical emergency response plans or emergency action plans.
Minimal effort is needed to ensure great outcomes. In schools with AEDs, approximately 70% of children survive sudden cardiac arrest – seven times the overall survival rate for children. And let’s not forget, these will also protect community members and visitors who come to the school and sporting events!
It’s a logical step to ensure the best chance of survival when a cardiac emergency happens, and cardiac arrests HAVE happened at Vermont schools – 23 times, in fact, in the last ten years.
