Here we will list some of the frequently asked questions and their corresponding answers. If you do not see your question answered here, please email GenCyber@vt.edu for more information.
Q: Are you hiring Teaching Assistants?
A: If you are a university student studying cybersecurity, email gencyber@vt.edu for more information.
Q: Can you tell me more about the schedule and the agenda?
A: There will be several webinars before camp, to introduce our staff and get everyone prepared for camp. The in-person portion of the camp will take place on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech. Registration will be on Sunday, 22 June 2025. Camp will end on Friday, 27 June 2025. We will hold webinars and TLC zoom meetings throughout the rest of the summer.
Q: Can you tell me more about the application process?
A: We will accept ~14 participants. We will review applications as they are received and invited teachers will get a response within 3 weeks of applying. Invited teachers must submit a letter of recommendation from their supervisor to be officially accepted into camp. Once we have 14 teachers and 10 alternates, we will stop accepting applications.
Q: When will I be notified if I've been accepted?
A: We plan to notify participants on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed. Our goal is to respond within two weeks of submission of your application.
Q: Does 'secondary' include 8th grade?
A: Usually not. We prefer 9-12. If you are middle-school teacher, you are free to apply.
Q: I've attended a GenCyber camp in the past. Can I apply to this year's workshop?
A: Yes!
Q: What are the costs for this workshop?
A: There is no cost for this workshop. We provide a travel allowance for your travel to Blacksburg and home. You will be housed in a Virginia Tech dormitory, in an individual bedroom. We provide all meals. It will be great.
Q: Do we get a free laptop?
A: No, but you will go home with useful supplies.
Q: Is there an honorarium?
A: There is a $1,000 honorarium for the entire GenCyber camp. The honorarium will be awarded in two parts: one for completing the in-person camp and the remainder for completing the TLC post-camp webinars.
Q: Will I need to create a lesson plan?
A: Yes.
Q: Who do I contact if I have more questions?
A: Please contact Ingrid Burbey, Program Director, at gencyber@vt.edu with your questions.
