VERO

VERO is a social media platform and mobile app that markets itself as being free from advertisements, data mining, and algorithms. It was founded by Ayman Hariri, the son of the former Lebanese prime minister, and launched in 2015 as an alternative to Facebook and Instagram. The app became popular with certain creative communities, such as cosplayers, makeup artists, tattoo artists, and skateboarders, due to its pinch and zoom magnification feature. In March 2018, VERO's popularity increased significantly after the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, and the app became the most downloaded in 18 countries within a week. VERO's content feed is similar to Instagram's, but users can share a wider variety of content and the feed is chronological rather than algorithm-based. The app's business model involves inviting the first one million users to use it for free and then charging a subscription fee to any subsequent users, and it generates revenue through affiliate fees when someone buys a product they find on VERO.
