Professional Experience

Satishkumar L Varma has been awarded a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) under the guidance of Dr. Sanjay N Talbar from SGGS IE & T, SRTMU, Nanded, India, in March 2013. I received my B. Tech and M. Tech degrees in Computer Engineering from DBATU, Lonere, India, in June 2000 and January 2004, respectively. With 25 years of experience in academia, I have held various roles across multiple institutions, from Lecturer to Associate Professor and Professor, with significant administrative responsibilities. I have worked as Professor & Head of the Department of Information Technology at Pillai College of Engineering (Autonomous), New Panvel, affiliated with the University of Mumbai, and as Assistant Professor & Head of the Department of Information Technology at DBIT, Kurla, Mumbai. Currently, I serve as an Associate Professor at DJSCE, Vile Parle, and have previously led the Department of Information Technology and served as the Head of Department and Associate Dean of R&D at PCE, New Panvel.

In my administrative roles, I have successfully presented the Department to several accreditation bodies. I presented the Department successfully to the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) at MES Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel on May 11, 2022. I also presented the Department successfully to the UGC Expert Committee for the Grant of Fresh Autonomous Status at MES Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel on October 18-19, 2021. Additionally, I presented the Department successfully to the NAAC at MES Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel on November 26, 2019. These efforts helped secure vital accreditations and recognitions, enhancing the department’s reputation and quality of education.

I have guided 23 postgraduate (PG) students and 3 PhD students. Currently, I am supervising 1 PhD research scholar in Computer Science and 2 PhD research scholars in Information Technology. My teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Information Technology and Computer Engineering, where I emphasize practical learning and industry relevance.

As a Ph.D. Recognized Teacher in both Information Technology and Computer Engineering, as well as an M.E. Recognized Teacher in Information Technology, I have been deeply involved in academic research and mentorship. I have received and successfully executed 7 funded projects worth INR 16.05 Lakhs, including the Avishkar Research Fellowship from the Governor of Maharashtra, securing a grant of ₹1.00 lakh; the ICSSR PFMS Scheme, ICSSR, securing a grant of ₹5.00 lakh; the NPTEL Translator Project, IIT Madras, receiving a grant of ₹0.60 lakh; the Minor Research Project, University of Mumbai, with a grant of ₹0.40 lakh; and the Advanced Database Laboratory (MODROB), AICTE Sponsored, with a grant of ₹8.00 lakh. These projects highlight my ongoing commitment to advancing research and development in the field, supporting the integration of innovative technologies into both teaching and practice.

I have also published 11 book chapters, 18 papers in Scopus, SCI, WoS, and UGC Care list journals, and more than 40 papers in refereed National and International Conferences, including IEEE, ACM, Elsevier, Springer, CRC Press - Taylor & Francis, Atlantis Press, and IET. Notably, I received a second-best paper award at the National level paper presentation competition in Threshold-2000. With 7 copyrights and 3 patents published or under examination, I have been active in contributing to the advancement of technology. Furthermore, I have delivered 41 invited talks in STTPs, FDPs, Workshops, Seminars, and Webinars, and I have coordinated 17 STTPs and FDPs, while attending 80 such events. I am a proud member of IEEE, ISTE, and CSI.

In addition to my teaching and research activities, I have also contributed as a reviewer for several prestigious journals, including Transactions on Image Processing (TIP) (IEEE), Biomedical Signal Processing and Control (BSPC) (Elsevier), Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering (BBE) (Elsevier), Control and Cybernetics (CandC) (Walter de Gruyter), Computers, Materials and Continua (CMC) (Tech Science Press), Signal, Image and Video Processing (SIVP) (Springer Nature), Informatica (Slovenia) (Slovene Society Informatika), International Journal of Imaging Systems and Technology (John Wiley & Sons), and International Journal of Innovative Computing and Applications (IJICA) (Inderscience Publishers).

Throughout my career, I have been committed to fostering a research-driven academic environment, guiding students and faculty in various research initiatives, and enhancing curriculum quality. My leadership roles have involved strategic planning, faculty development, and ensuring the department’s growth through accreditation and industry partnerships, all aimed at offering high-quality education that prepares students for the challenges in the tech industry.
