Voter26 was founded with the objective of increasing voter turnout in the upcoming municipal election in London, Ontario
As shown in the graphic above, voter turnout in recent municipal elections has been on a decline. In the recent election (2022), only 25.5% of 281,073 eligible voters casted their ballots. Compare that to the 2018 municipal election, voter turnout declined by 13.96%. These numbers are concerning.
Voting in municipal elections is just as important in voting in a federal or provincial election. In a municipal election, voters get to vote for City Councillors who represent them on municipal governance issues and decisions, which are as important as provincial and federal governance matters. Some matters that the municipal government takes on include: Transit (London Transit Commission), Maintenance of streets (Sidewalks, roads, bike lanes), Garbage/recycling collection, and Maintenance of parks and recreational programs. Voters also get to vote for School Board Trustees who represent them and bring their concerns to their school board based on whichever school support system they have chosen.
With the concerning decrease in voter turnout in the past 3 municipal elections, we at Voter26 believe that something needs to be done to tackle this decrease. Being able to vote in elections is an important democratic right to exercise, and exercising that right by voting in a municipal election is just as important as voting in a federal or provincial election as municipal governance can have an impact on people's lives on a day-to-day basis.
Our main way of tackling this decrease is by keeping voters informed through any way we can. We will be using our website, along with our social media accounts to keep voters informed on when to vote, how to vote, and who is running for office.
