Note: In South Africa, 16 December is a public holiday, the Day of Reconciliation. The holiday came into effect after the end of apartheid in 1995 with the intent of fostering reconciliation and national unity for the country. The day involves remembering and celebrating past history and recognizing veteran's contributions in order to work on healing the damage done by apartheid. To the Afrikaners (Boers) it also known as the Day of the Vow, to commemorate the Battle of Blood River in Natal on 16 December 1838 against the Zulu, the outcome of which they believe demonstrated God's intervention and played a central role in fostering their cultural identity.
