My name is Nathan Parker, and I'm running for HRM regional council in district 11 (Spryfield- Sambro Loop- Prospect Road).
I'm running for council because I'm sick and tired of this city being run by business people on behalf of landlords and luxury property developers, while the working people of Halifax are stuck paying extortionary rent prices or sleeping in tents in parks and in front of the hospital. It is disgusting, I'm mad as hell about it, and I'm especially angry that the people running things don't care.
We didn't suffer a natural disaster that destroyed a bunch of housing and suddenly put people on the street. Rent went up. We hit hard times, and instead of implementing an immediate rent freeze the city decided to legislate where tents can go. It doesn't matter where people's tents are set up when winter comes, they still freeze to death. The housing crisis isn't just some nebulous economic problem. People's lives and dignity are at stake.
This city isn't working, and we need to fix it.
If you've seen other candidate's election materials then you've probably seen their face plastered across a sign or pamphlet wearing a nice suit with a big phony politician smile. Personally, I don't understand what they're smiling about when there are so many glaring issues with our city. Rent is out of control. Hundreds of working people are living in tents and on the streets. Our public transportation is unreliable and underdeveloped. The cost of living is rising far faster than the rate of wages. People are struggling to find decent jobs. Students come to study here for four years and leave, because they can't apply their degrees if they stay. The local environment is in peril, and the politicians I'm opposing have printed out big plastic signs and laminated pamphlets to tell you how much they care about it. It's dishonest and disgraceful.
I love this city, but I am not blind to its problems and I refuse to pretend they don't exist. These are all issues that the municipal government can and should address, and the way to do that is to elect people who know the struggles and hardships regular Haligonians deal with every day, and will work to fix them. We don't need to elect more business people in nice suits with big fake smiles who will just maximize profit for development companies and take the side of wealthy landlords over workers and families who are just trying to get by.Â
You are not powerless to change the way the government works, and the government is not powerless to address the city-wide issues that working class individuals and families face. I want you to wield me as a brick, and throw me through the window of city hall. Let's tell them to get their act together and start implementing real, positive change in this city. Show them that the people of Halifax don't just deserve that change, they demand it. Send city council the message that they can't just ignore us and show up to local photo ops every four years, asking for votes to keep on doing nothing.
