VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

JOURNEY HOME

The Journey Home works to reduce recidivism (return to prison), creating a stronger, safer community. Focusing on the areas of residency, employment, support and treatment, as well as transportation and education, program staff assesses the needs, potential barriers and strengths facing individuals newly released from prison (returning citizens). Among the most common barriers: homelessness and housing issues, employment skills or discrimination, addiction and/or mental health needs, education/training and transportation.

Circles of Support is a reentry program that matches formerly incarcerated individuals (Core Team Members) with volunteers in the community (Circle Members) to provide social support and positive community to the Core Team Member. Circles provide a safe place where the Core Team Member can be heard, encouraged, and respected while they discuss the challenges they may be experiencing as they transition back into the community.

Circle Member

Circle of Support volunteers, "Circle Members," meet each week for an hour and a half, over 6 months. Volunteers provide Core Team Members (newly released from prison) with mentoring and alternative solutions to problems as they work through challenges. The Circles of Support offer an environment that is positive, supportive and respectful and also holds Core Team Members accountable for achieving and succeeding in their weekly goals. The Circle offers the support individuals often need to be successful in their return to the community.

Circle meeting times are determined by each Circle. Once a day, time, and location is chosen, Circles typically keep that schedule for the duration of their time together.

RETURNING PRISONER SIMULATIONS

***VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ON HOLD INDEFINITELY DUE TO COVID-19***

JustDane’s Prison Reentry Simulation gives participants an “up close” view of what it’s like to be released from prison. It inserts participants into realistic scenarios and lifelike struggles that those released from prison are likely to encounter.

This workshop begins with an introduction to the principles of Restorative Justice and explains the basic needs of returning residents. Each participant receives a mock profile that describes the life of a formerly incarcerated person and they take on the role of that character during the role-play. Participants must complete fundamental life tasks, such as finding housing and a job, or simply cashing a check. Volunteers fill the roles of community workers/resources.

By incorporating the restorative practice of storytelling, the simulation opens a glimpse into the sense of overwhelming frustration that a formerly incarcerated person may feel. Immediately after the role-play, a facilitated debriefing by the simulation Director allows participants to share their immediate reactions.

The simulation concludes with a panel of formerly incarcerated people who each share their own re-entry journey and then answer questions from participants.

Madison-area Urban Ministry has a copyright on our Prison Reentry Simulations. If you or your business/organization is interested in hosting one, please complete this online form.

Role Play Actor

Volunteers fill roles of community workers during the role play portion of the Prison Reentry Simulation. Examples of community worker roles include job center, health center, parole office, credit union, food pantry, and more.

Prison Reentry Simulations are scheduled throughout the year as we contract with organizations and businesses. Simulation dates are communicated to volunteers as they are scheduled. Volunteers opt into simulations as they work within their schedules.
