If you want closed-back monitoring and a lightweight fit for a big head, choose Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice; if you need an open-back planar design with a stated frequency range up to 40kHz, choose FiiO FT1. For voice recording and monitoring, I’d pick the Harlan Hogan; the FT1 is better suited to listening where an open-back design fits the room and task.
• Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice: Closed-back, over-ear design and 8.4-ounce weight are practical strengths; its wired setup and voice-focused tuning are less suited to people seeking an open-back listening experience.
• FiiO FT1: Open-back planar magnetic drivers and a stated 20Hz–40kHz frequency range are its main draws; its 1.04kg listed item weight and lack of noise control are meaningful trade-offs.
• For voice work, isolation, and longer sessions: Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice is the more purpose-focused option.
• For open-back, detailed listening at home: FiiO FT1 makes more sense, provided you do not need closed-back isolation.
• For a big head: The Harlan Hogan’s thicker padded headband and leather-covered memory-foam ear pads are relevant comfort features, though neither product’s headband adjustment range is specified.
The Harlan Hogan is a wired, closed-back, over-ear headphone designed around voice monitoring. Its stated 8.4-ounce weight is a practical advantage for anyone who expects to wear headphones through recording or editing sessions. The product information also highlights a thicker padded leather headband and leather-covered memory-foam ear pads, features that make comfort a central part of its design.
That combination is especially appealing if you record voice while listening for direction or monitoring your own delivery. A closed-back design is the key distinction here: it suits a task where keeping headphone audio from spilling into a microphone matters. The stated sensitivity is 98 ± 3dB, and the listed frequency range is 10kHz–26kHz. Those figures describe the product, but they do not by themselves tell you exactly how it will sound in your room or on your voice.

The FiiO FT1 is an open-back, wired over-ear headphone built around a planar magnetic driver. Its listed frequency range is 20Hz–40kHz, and the product description focuses on its large 95 × 86mm flat unit, thin diaphragm, and dual sapphire-and-aluminum coating. Those details point toward a design intended for detailed home or studio listening, rather than a closed-back tool for preventing sound leakage during voice recording.
The main trade-off is the open-back design. It does not offer noise control, so it is a poor fit if you need to block outside sound or want to reduce headphone audio escaping into a nearby microphone. The listed item weight is 1.04kg, substantially more than the Harlan Hogan’s 8.4 ounces. That is worth considering if comfort during long sessions is a priority, especially when choosing headphones for a big head.
Choose the FT1 if you want a wired planar headphone and your listening environment works with an open-back design. Skip it if isolation is important, or if you are shopping for sports earbuds. Neither product is an earbud, neither is described as waterproof, and neither has USB-C charging: both are wired over-ear headphones. So searches such as best sports earbuds for big head or best usb c charging sports earbuds for big head point to a different product category altogether.
• Best for voice recording where headphone leakage matters → Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice. Its closed-back design is the more suitable fit for monitoring near a microphone.
• Best for open-back listening → FiiO FT1. Its open construction is the defining difference, but it does not provide noise control.
• Best for a lighter listed weight → Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice. It is listed at 8.4 ounces, while the FT1’s product information lists 1.04kg.
• Best for a stated range extending to 40kHz → FiiO FT1. Its listed range is 20Hz–40kHz, compared with 10kHz–26kHz for the Harlan Hogan.
• Best for extended wear based on the stated comfort features → Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice. Its thicker padded leather headband and leather-covered memory-foam ear pads are specific comfort features; the FT1’s sheet does not provide comparable padding details.
• Best for avoiding outside-sound isolation as a design goal → FiiO FT1. Its open-back design and lack of noise control are a better match when closed-back isolation is not wanted.
• Best for a big head if you prioritize lower weight and padded contact points → Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice. Neither product’s fit range is specified, so I would not assume either guarantees a comfortable fit for every head shape.
• Best for USB-C charging or waterproof sports use → Neither. Both are wired over-ear headphones, and neither sheet states a waterproof rating or USB-C charging feature.
I would choose the Voice Over Essentials Harlan Hogan Voice for voice monitoring because its closed-back design, lower listed weight, and padded headband and ear pads suit that job more directly. For a big head, those comfort details make it the more compelling of these two, though fit cannot be guaranteed from the listed specifications. I’d choose the FiiO FT1 instead when open-back planar listening and its stated range up to 40kHz matter more than isolation or weight.
The Harlan Hogan is the more purpose-aligned option: it has a closed-back design and is described for voice monitoring. The FT1 is open-back and has no noise control, so it is less suited to monitoring where isolation from headphone audio matters.
The Harlan Hogan has a thicker padded leather headband and leather-covered memory-foam ear pads, plus a listed weight of 8.4 ounces. The sheets do not state headband adjustment range or head-fit measurements, so those features cannot guarantee a fit for every big head.
Neither product is described as waterproof or as a sports headphone. Both are wired, over-ear models, so they are not the sports earbuds or USB-C charging earbuds some shoppers may be seeking.
The Harlan Hogan is closed-back and described as voice-focused, with a 10kHz–26kHz listed frequency range. The FiiO FT1 is open-back with a planar magnetic driver and a listed 20Hz–40kHz range; those specifications do not alone establish which will sound better to a particular listener.
