Vocaroo App ("Vocaroo," "the App," "we," "us," or "our") is an offline voice recorder for Android. This Privacy Policy explains how the App handles information when you use it.
Summary: Vocaroo is designed to work entirely on your device. We do not operate servers that collect your personal data, and we do not sell your information. Audio recordings and app data stay on your phone unless you choose to share or export them.
By installing or using Vocaroo App, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
When you start a recording, the App accesses your device microphone to capture audio. Recordings are saved as audio files on your device (for example, AAC/M4A format).
Collected when: You tap record and grant microphone permission
Purpose: Core voice recording functionality
Stored where: On your device only (see Section 4)
Sent to us: No
The App stores information about your recordings locally to help you organize and play them back, including:
Recording title and file name
Duration, file size, and format
Folder assignment, favorites, and pinned status
Creation and update timestamps
This metadata is stored in a local database on your device and is not transmitted to us.
The App saves your preferences locally, such as:
Default recording format and quality
Auto-stop timer setting
Sort order, theme (light/dark/system)
Playback speed, waveform display, and screen-on while recording options
These settings are stored on your device using Android DataStore and are not sent to us.
Vocaroo App does not collect, request, or store:
Name, email address, phone number, or other account information (no login or registration)
Location data
Contacts, photos, or other media (except audio you record)
Device advertising ID (the App explicitly removes the AD_ID permission)
Analytics, crash reports, or usage telemetry to the developer
Payment or financial information
All data processed by Vocaroo is used only to provide App features on your device:

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or marketing.
Recordings: App-specific storage on your device (typically Music/Vocaroo/ within the App's private storage area)
Database: Local Room database (vocaroo.db) for recording and folder metadata
Settings: Local DataStore file (vocaroo_settings)
Android backup may be enabled for the App. If you use Google/Android device backup, your App data may be included in your device backup according to your system settings. We do not control or access those backups.
Recordings are stored in app-specific storage that other apps cannot access without your permission. When you share a recording, Android grants temporary read access only to the app you choose.
We do not transmit your recordings or metadata over the internet to our servers.
We do not share your data with third parties.
You may choose to share or export recordings yourself:
Share: Uses Android's system share sheet to send an audio file to another app you select (email, messaging, cloud storage, etc.). We do not control what those apps do with shared content.
Export: Copies a recording to your device's Downloads folder (Downloads/Vocaroo/) when you use the export feature.
Any sharing or export is initiated by you and handled by Android and the destination app you choose.
Vocaroo requests the following permissions:
Permission
Why it is needed
Microphone (RECORD_AUDIO)
To record voice audio
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS)
To show a visible notification while recording in the background (Android 13+)
Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MICROPHONE)
To continue recording when the App is in the background, with a persistent notification
The App does not request internet access, location, contacts, storage (beyond app-specific storage), or advertising ID permissions.
You can revoke permissions at any time in your device Settings. Revoking microphone permission will prevent recording.
Vocaroo App does not integrate third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or social login SDKs (such as Firebase Analytics, AdMob, or Facebook SDK).
The App uses standard open-source Android libraries (Jetpack Compose, Room, DataStore, Media3, etc.) for UI, local storage, and audio playback. These libraries operate on your device and do not send your personal data to us.
Some Android system libraries included by Google may declare network-related permissions (such as ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) as part of the Android framework. The App does not use these permissions to collect or transmit your data.
Vocaroo App is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [your-email@example.com] and we will assist with deletion where applicable.
You control your data:
Delete a recording: Remove individual recordings from within the App
Clear all App data: Settings → Apps → Vocaroo App → Storage → Clear data (wording may vary by device)
Uninstall: Removing the App deletes its app-specific data from your device (unless included in a device backup)
We do not retain copies of your recordings or metadata on our servers because we do not receive them.
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data (such as access, correction, deletion, or portability). Because Vocaroo stores data locally on your device and does not collect it on our servers, you can exercise most rights directly through the App or your device settings.
If you have questions or requests, contact us at [your-email@example.com].
Vocaroo processes data on your device locally. We do not transfer your recordings or metadata to servers in other countries. If you share content to a third-party service, that service's privacy practices apply.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
For significant changes, we may provide notice within the App or on our store listing.
