at first i liked them casually and now hatsune miku lives rent free in my brain
VOCALOID is a massive program. I had to copy-paste a list because I couldn't remember everyone.
As such these drop-downs will only be the most popular and prevalent in the VOCALOID community (and also a couple of my faves.. i'm not biased at all wdym!)
Commonly known for being the number one anime girl (is not from any anime media), the man who got married to her, for being the number one princess in the world and her iconic teal hair colour. Contrary to popular belief, she is not the first vocaloid to be made!!
Also localised to Hatsune Miku, her voice is provided by Saki Fujita. Her design was made by Japanese artist Garou Kei, who was commissioned by Crypton Future Media, who tried to detail out what a VOCALOID was to him in detail and gave him the signature blue-green colour to work with, but even then it took him a month to finish.
Her name means "first sound of the future" and she is also commonly known by 39, as it can be read as miku as well as sankyuu. She was released in August 2007.
She has 15 voicebanks and is modelled to look around 16 years old. Her colour palette is an iconic teal with highlights of pink all around. Her original design features a grey skirt and shirt, though in later versions this changes to a white shirt and black skirt. Her character item, although normally represented as a leek is actually a spring onion (naegi).
Popular songs featuring Miku include:
Rolling Girl by Wowaka (r.i.p.)
Senbonzakura by Kuruosa-P
World Is Mine by ryo ( supercell )
Ghost Rule by DECO*27
Ievan polkka, though this song is a cover of a finnish folk song and the lyrics are not actually words in any language.
and way more others to count!!
Gumi, sometimes known as Megpoid Gumi, has 18 voicebanks and has the most of any VOCALOID! These are comprised of all of her whisper, adult, English, power, sweet and other voicebanks. She was released in June 2009, and although not gaining too much popularity at first after fans brushed her off as 'nothing special', she is now one of the most well-known and popular vocaloids out there.
Gumi is voiced and named after Megumi Nakajima. Gumi's name, (derived from 'Megumi' as a childhood nickname) and the software name, Megpoid (derived from MEGumi, with poid derived from PPOI like LOID) are often mixed together by international fans, making a 'full name' for her, although her name is just Gumi.
Her design consists of a bright emerald green hair colour with choppy bangs, green eyes and a familiar pair of white-and-pink goggles that are included in all of her box art except for her English voicebank. She wears orange clothing of varying styles but tends to keep a disconnected white collar with a pink brooch in the middle.
Her most well-known songs include:
Echo by Circus-P/VOCACIRCUS
KING by Kanaria
Machine Gun by Kira
GETCHA! by GIGA-P and Kira
Copycat by Circus-P/VOCACIRCUS
Her voicebanks tend to be more well-used by English producers like GHOST and CIRCUS-P although Kanaria is well known for using her. Gumi's english voicebank has gained her the most attention, with her popularity spiking right after the first release in March 2013.
MEIKO is also one of the first four PROJECT DAISY vocals and is voiced by famous Japanese singer and songwriter Meiko Haigō. She is commonly depicted with KAITO as they are from the same series of vocals. She is named after her voice-provider and her placeholder name is HANAKO (after Hanako Yamada, Japanese equiv. of Jane Smith.)
She released in November 2004 for the first VOCALOID engine and was popular because of her being marketed towards men. She, like KAITO, has five voicebanks, four for VOCALOID3 (including: English, straight, whisper and soft) and one for the original VOCALOID engine. She sold 3000+ units on her first release, faring much better than her male counterpart.
She is portrayed with a red jacket and matching skirt with dark brown hair and eyes. Her V3 design gives her boots but her original box art is relatively ambiguous in style. She holds a microphone based upon the Shure Brothers 55SH variant of the Small Unidyne microphone.
Popular songs featuring MEIKO include:
Nostalogic by Yuukiss
On the Rocks by OSTER project
Piano x Forte x Scandal by OSTER project
Fräulein=Bibliotheka by nyanyannya
KAITO, voiced by Naoto Fūga, famous Japanese singer, who treats him like a son (it's really sweet), is one of the first four known 'Project Daisy' vocals. He is known as KAITO because of a name-selection competition held, and one of the reasons his name was picked was because it would be easy for foreigners to pronounce. Before his name was selected he was known as Taro (as in Yamada Taro, a common Japanese placeholder name and the equivalent of our John Smith)
He was released in February 2006 for the first VOCALOID engine, but had lacking marketing. He wasn't very popular at first and sold under 1000, making him an unsuccessful release in the company's eyes. However, a little bit after, he gained a sudden rise in popularity and sold over 1000+ times. He has five voicebanks, four for VOCALOID3 (including: English, straight, whisper and soft) and one for the original VOCALOID program.
KAITO's original design featured brown pants with orange highlights all throughout his design. He has dark blue hair and a matching scarf, while wearing a white overcoat of sorts. His character item is ice-cream. He is commonly depicted as middle-aged but has no intended age.
His voice has been described to sound like Kermit the Frog and was intended for jazz songs but is flexible and is used in many genres.
Popular songs featuring KAITO include:
Cantarella by Kurousa-P
I Wish They'd Just Die by Dobu Usagi and Yukai na Vorpal Bunnies
Doctor Funk Beat by nyanyannya/Daitensai-P
Fukase, voiced by Fukase Satoshi of SEKAI NO OWARI is an incredibly unique VOCALOID. He was released in January 2016 for VOCALOID4 and was developed by YAMAHA.
He has three voicebanks, all made for VOCALOID4. He is not the only VOCALOID with rules about the use of his voicebank, but he definitely has some of the most restricting. To use him for monetry gain and to upload him to music streaming sites requires the producer to ask permission to use him. This also means his likeness cannot be used in doujins and sold.
His English voicebank is rather well-known. He only has one because his voice provider, Fukase Satoshi, enjoys using English lyrics in his songs. Fans have said that his Japanese and English voicebanks sound completely different and he is a huge fan favourite, known mostly for the 'fanon' personality of being a memelord/troll. He, although not being able to be monetized, features in many 'talkloids' (skits using the vocaloid voicebanks) and he has become quite well-known for them.
His design consists of bright red hair, an asymmetrical and scarred face with a top hat resembling a seal face with a red top half and a white bottom half. He has a red skirt beneath an asymmetrical overcoat of sorts, that is white and relatively messed up. One of his hands is bandaged up and the other is not. He has a red cross bandaid-style accessory on his nose and weilds a cane with an animal foot on the bottom. He was designed via a fan competition that was won by Pixiv artist mikuma.
Popular songs featuring fukase include:
The Court Jester by thquib
Yoroboshi by BCNO
The Day I Became A Monster by rerulili
Cause I'm A Liar by Mcki Robyns-P
The Kagamine twins are the most powerful sibling duo in VOCALOID. Although not canonically related, it is commonly accepted in the VOCALOID fandom as they both resemble each other very closely. They are modelled to be 14 but have no canon age. They are both voiced by Asami Shimoda.
They have 10(?) voicebanks in total, but with v4's EVEC feature the tone can be changed.
Their designs both feature yellow hair and blue/green eyes. They have the same style sleeve cuffs as Miku and appear to be wearing some form of school uniform. All of Rin's designs feature her wearing a big white bow, white headphones and hairclips, while Len only has white headphones. Both of their outfits are accented by yellow.
Popular songs featuring the Kagamines include:
Tokyo Teddy Bear by Neru (feat. Rin)
Becoming Potatoes by Neru (feat Rin and Len)
Butterfly On Your Right Shoulder by Nori-P (feat. Rin)
Bring It On by GIGA and REOL (feat. Rin and Len)
Paradichlorobenzene by Owata-P (feat. Len)
these voicebanks will be added later!
