Average ping is around 50ms so that might not be an issue. I wasn't sure what would happen though if the connection timed out. Naturally it would take hours and hours to shift that amount of data, would you happen to know if the converter has a timeout setting or will it keep going until complete.

vmconverter is no longer officially supported - i believe there are many sites hosting this outside of the vmware bubble, but caution is advised with this route. Other options may be to use StarWind V2V converter this may help.

Once the converter starts to execute the job, it creates a "helper" VM with the name of the server on the ESXi host, but then gets stuck at 1% followed by a task failure minutes later. A review of it's screen (via VMRC) shows it received and passed all IP info & ping test, then it gets stuck asking for "converter login:"

Apparently this happened to others as per the VMware forums post HERE, yet none of the suggestions provided there have helped. I even tried the converter-worker.xml changes outlined in THIS KB article, as well as changing the "UseHostIPForWebSocketTicket" key to TRUE, and still same issue after 6 different attempts!

Hey, I just installed this converter successfully without any issue in my PC with windows 7. What I observed in the log as have user profile problem. Please delete the user profile Admin~1 or rename old and logoff. now login make sure user profile is not show temporary like ADMIN~1. It should be ADMIN. You can try to install vCenter converter.

AlessandroRomeo68 I was able to install converter on a separate install of 7. I'm confused though. I want to take the hard drive of a dead server and convert it to a virtual machine so that I can run it on a replacement server. How do I do that? In vCenter I can only find the options of using the local machine or a remote machine. Keep in mind the server is dead so I cann't run it to access the files that way. I can slave the hard drive as an external drive in an enclosure to access the files. What's the best way to turn it into a vmdk? I know that I can slave the hard drive to the virtual machine but I'd rather convert it.

These conversions were made with vmware converter and all went by with flying colors. Now the issue is that now I'm totally unable to convert anything from the new 6.5 host. This is a must-need-feature as our users constantly move these VM's from the host to their player/workstation infrastructure.

I'm having issues with uninstalling the VMware Converter Standalone agent keeps generating the following error: Could Not Stop Service When I check services, i'm unable to locate the VMWare Converter Standalone Agent service which i'm assuming requires the service to run before uninstallation. So I've been tasked with converting our physical SQL server (with many databases referencing about 5 other virtual servers) I have never converted a SQL server box and am looking for some Best Practices or known issues to watch out for. I've been reading about what to do, what NOT to do, etc. I am planning on using the VMware Converter Standalone to perform the conversion. I know I need to stop all SQL services, or pause the databases. But what is the best way, step-by-step, to do this? Should I use the "Synchronize" function in the converter? Do I need to restore each database from a latest backup to the converted VM? Or can I simply stop services, convert it then bring it online? Are there queries I need to run on the databases after the conversion? I am not a DBA.... !

Is it possible that an older version of the converter or its agent is installed inside the VM? If yes, uninstall it. The VMware Converter installs its own agent automatically if you connect to the machine with administrator credentials.

But if you prefer converter approach I would strongly recommend you using a 3rd party V2V converter by StarWind instead of VMwares. It's free and helped me a lot of times working with all the most commonly used VM formats: VMDK, VHD/VHDX, StarWind native IMG, QCOW. It works both ways, converting from and to any selected format, thus having better functionality than similar converters.

Somewhat related question -- If VMware Converter 4 is totally and utterly separate from VMware Converter Enterprise, what good does the Enterprise converter plugin I already have installed do me? Seems kind of wasted/useless to me at the moment.

I'm trying to copy a live Centos 5 system to a new ESX environment in order to upgrade it. I'm using ESXi 6.0.0 and the standalone converter 6.0.0 build=2716716. I create the job to copy the system, and it runs a while and then fails with the message A General System error occurred: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

I've turned the firewall off on the Windows machine (and on the Mac system the windows VM is running on, it's all on a internal network anyway, but I was able to successfully use that combination earlier with the converter on a different ESX and Linux server to migrate). Unfortunately this current copy error message lacks any specific information to run down the problem.

Exported the logs, it looks like it exports every log from every time I've tried to do the conversion. I don't see anything on how to delete the logs from previous jobs. The last run of the job is #11 today 11/3 starting at 2:58:40 PM and ended in failure at 5:09:13 PM. I'm attaching the zip file from the export logs with all the logs, as I don't want to delete something that might be useful. I've also included a screen snapshot of the converter window after the failure just incase.

Made the changes to the converter-worker.xml file (The KB is for 4 and 5, it doesn't say anything about 6.0) , it only seems to partially work. I can't ssh into the helper machine from anywhere (my Mac, the ESXI host), but it did keep the helper machine from getting deleted after the failure.

The installer script prompts me to confirm if I want to install the stand alone converter server and the client - I say yes (I was able to install just the client but that didn't seem to be able to connect to the remote server on my network that I wish to make a VM of). e24fc04721
