VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September2025
With so many rides to choose from over June and July it’s impossible to cover everything in these short notes – Stretton Watermill, RAF Cosford, 8 Lakes, Glyndyfrdwy Show, Sleap Ride-in to name a few. Full reports and photos will be in the next Cheshire Cats Newsletter – why not drop me an email to sign up for it? Coming up this month we have the Goostrey Run, Snowdon Loop, Mill Meece, Tiddlers Tootle, Canals and Castles, Anglesey, and Falling Leaves – full details on the calendar and watch out for WhatsApp notifications. Photo shows 3 happy chappies (despite the look on their faces) at Sleap Airfield.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2025
June Machine Night surpassed all previous gatherings with over 70 bikes and getting on for 100 attendees. Best Pre 1960 Bike went to Keith Riley with his 1930 KTT Velocette, Best Post 1960 was awarded to Rob Parker for his Triumph T60 and a special award to Malc Cooper for his (well, Lynns really) BSA Gold Star - pictured here. It was good to see some members from the ex-Manchester and High Peak Section visiting us . For any members in the M&HP area that are looking for a ‘home’ you are more than welcome to come along and join in with any of our meetings and rides – maybe starting with the Whitley Run on 3rd August or the Goostrey Run on 7th September.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2025
Rides -a plenty during May. Max kicked off with his ‘Meander’, the Berwyns delivered their usual bluebell display, John Burgess and Alan Crutchley rode in the first Wray Run, organised by our Central Lancs neighbours - Andy took the VMCC gazebo to support the event. Mill Meece is likely to become a regular in our year after a great day out at the pumping station. May Club Night produced a raft of suggestions for rides, events and activities for the next year. Your Committee will be discussing these in depth and, with your help, making plans. The only disappointment was the last ride of the month as the Old Stores Run was rained off but the fun will be continuing in June and beyond check our CCats website calendar for up to date info and tune in to WhatsApp.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2025
Thank you to all those sections, far and wide, that turned up to take part in the Inter-Section Photo Quiz. One of the home teams eventually ran out as winners but more importantly a fun night was had by all. Our first calendared runs have been taking place with an uncharacteristically dry Tiddlers run from Mike Griffiths and a visit to the Wirral for Paul Wolfs Parkgate Chippy Run. The photo shows new member Ian Milestone, joining us for his first outing with the Section, with Les Hodgkinson, overlooking the Mersey Estuary at Eastham Ferry (tea stop). Busy month coming up – keep you eye on the calendar and WhatsApp.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2025
March club night was a cosy affair as we squeezed into the restaurant at the Cock of Budworth for Phil Greens excellent presentation on his road trip around the war cemeteries of Normandy. A reminder that we now have new Cheshire Cats Regalia available to order – get in touch if you want any. Also available from Andy Royle for anyone that hasn’t already got one are the crash cards produced by Alex Loader. May is a busy month with lots of opportunity to meet and ride, starting with – Lets Eat Breakfast 6th, Mow Cop Run 8th, Berwyns Run 14th, Club Night 15th, Mill Meece Ride-In 18th, Muck and Nettles Run 21st, Old Stores Run 27th.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2025
February club night was well attended for the very entertaining talk from John Moulton on his new book “Racing off the Page”. During the warm spell at the end of February several members blew off some cobwebs on a ride down to Ma Bakers Café at Prees Heath and met up with similarly minded members of the North Staffs Section. Coming up - Lets Eat Breakfast, Tuesday 1st - Club Night, Thursday 17th, time to rinse off those grey cell for the annual battle with local sections in Stephens fiendish Inter-Section Quiz, all VMCC Sections are invited. First official calendared CCat ride is Mikes Tiddlers Trot on Saturday April 5th, Nantwich Lake 10.30am.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2025
Catching up with the Bring and Buy from January, the event raised £159, a little less than in previous years but not bad considering there were only 23 members attending. We have another planned for October 2025 and this would benefit from some deeper digging in those garages for good quality, useable, motorcycle related lots to tempt a better response. Lets Eat Breakfast – Tuesday 4th, Club Night – Thursday 20th with a talk from Phil Green on Motorcycle Touring in Normandy. Not much time left to get those machines in tip top condition for our rides beginning next month (maybe not as far as Normandy). Photos shows Andy Hellyar-Brook receiving the Pete Mills Trophy at the AGM in January.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2025
Our AGM was held last month and barring any upsets your committee will have been returned for a further 12 months but with a re-jig of positions and a couple of additions. Bob Moon has stepped back as Chairman and is replaced by Andy Royle. Dave Mackie has taken on the Newsletter from Andy and also responsibility for organising club night activities. Alan Crutchley has joined with ideas for new rides/activities over the next year. The AGM was followed by our re-arranged Bring and Buy run by Paul Wenlock – proceeds will be published when available. No formal rides this month but the usual breakfast meet at Lets Eat is on Tuesday 4th. Club Night is on Thursday 20th when we will be entertained by a talk from John Moulton author of Racing off the Page in the 1970’s. His book featured in the VMCC Journal some months ago and he will have copies with him if you are interested.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2025
A happy and safe 2025 to everyone in the VMCC. In November, our Bring and Buy succumbed to an attack of wintery weather after a last minute decision to postpone the evening. Keep hold of all those little gems of motorcycling goodness for a re-arranged time to be confirmed. Best wishes to Chris Corrigan, who at the time of writing, is undergoing a replacement hip operation after his unfortunate collision with a car. We closed out last year with our Christmas Meal - thanks go to Rob Randall for organising the venue at The Riverside Inn. Coming up this month is our breakfast meet at Lets Eat on Tuesday 7th Jan. Club night on 16th Jan will be our AGM – turn up and help to determine the way the Section works. Looking forward to our first riding event – Mikes Tiddlers Trot in April.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – December 2024
December will draw to a close another packed year of activities. As well as the regular events there have been more social rides giving members the opportunity for plenty of smiles. September and October club nights were down on numbers, not sure why - are we doing something wrong? Only 15 attended Octobers meeting. Their loss ,as it was an excellent presentation on 'The Moulton Crows', given by Phil Ashton (who may or may not be a 'Crow', I wouldn't like to say!) Christmas season approaching - many festive greetings to you all and we look forward to seeing more machines out in 2025. Coming up, Lets Eat Breakfast Tuesday 3rd. Christmas Meal Thursday 12th - contact Rob Randall for details on thecatskitchenbistro@gmail.com - there may still be space.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – November 2024
Septembers Goostrey Run again lived up to expectations with a good entry of 30 bikes. Once again the weather played ball and only let loose once most riders reached home. Since the last notes we have also visited Mill Meece Pumping Station, Carding Shed Café and The Snowdon Loop. Thanks to all involved with organising and leading. With no rides planned for November and December we have our Bring and Buy at November club night on 21st and our Festive Meal at The Riverside on 12th Dec. Contact Rob Randall for details on thecatskitchenbistro@gmail.com
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – October 2024
August kicked off with another successful Whitley Road Safety Run. The weather played havoc with the rest of the month. Coming up in October - Tuesday 1st Lets Eat Breakfast, Thursday 17th Club Night – in a change from the usual Bring and Buy (postponed until November) Phil Ashton will be bringing us the story of ‘The Moulton Crows’ in an evening of fun and entertainment. Our last calendared run of the year is the Scenic Peaks on Tuesday 8th October after which we look forward to our Christmas meal on 12th Dec and then next years official rides in what we hope will be a much better weather over 2025.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2024
July was a busy month with a variety of rides taking place, starting off with a wet charity bike night at the Leigh Arms, and raising an extra £244 for Bernie’s charity, Prostate Cancer Research. Further afield there were visits to Sleap, Ironbridge, Anson Engine Museum and the Peaks, amongst others. We will hopefully have had a successful (dry) Whitley Road Safety Run in August and if you get this in time don’t forget the Goostrey Run on 1st September. Coming up later this month Tuesday 3rd Lets Eat Breakfast, various runs on the calendar and Thursday 19th Club Night – a talk by Phil Green on ‘Motorcycle Touring’.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2024
Coming up this month Tuesday 6th Lets Eat Breakfast, Thursday 15th Club Night at The Cock. We had a good number of enjoyable rides in early June that focussed on North Wales including a visit to C&NW for the Llangollen Gathering where Max Hammond took the trophy for the most desirable bike. Later in the month we headed north of the ship canal guided by Lynne and Malcolm Cooper and also welcomed President of the VMCC, Neil Lewis, to the Stretton Water Mill gathering. Don’t forget the Whitley Run on 4th August.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2024
May saw a good number of events on the calendar starting with our annual ascent of Mow Cop, Bobs Berwyns Run - with the usual bluebells, followed by Pete Stott’s quick fire quiz at club night. Unfortunately, Mike Griffiths run was a casualty of poor weather but he plans to re-arrange for later in the year. The Old Stores Run and the Clwyds Run both took place in changeable ‘damp’ weather. Coming up in July, more rides but notably on 3rd July after the 8 Lakes Run there is a Howard Gill charity bike night at The Leigh Arms Acton Bridge 5pm onwards in honour of Bernie Horrigan and in aid of Prostate Cancer Research.

VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2024
Thanks to Mike Griffiths for a successful season opener at the Spring Run where 12 riders enjoyed an unusually dry ride. I’m sure Mike will make amends for that on the next one. At the March meeting members held a collection for Bernie Horrigan and a cheque for £300 was passed on Lindsey, his wife, to split between Prostate Cancer Research and Leighton Hospital Critical Care Unit. Lindsey sends here thanks to the Section. A busy riding month ahead – check out the online calendar for full details. See you all at Lets Eat on 7th May.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2024
More sad news this month as we report the passing of Bernie Horrigan, a stalwart member of the Cheshire Cats. Bernie had been a committee member since the creation of our section in 2012. An active participant in Section life, he will be greatly missed. RIP Bernie. Coming up this month Tuesday 2nd Lets Eat Breakfast, 13th Tiddlers Trot, 17th Parkgate Chippy, Thursday 18th Club Night. This month we have our usual Intersection Quiz organised by Stephen Herbert. Local Sections are all invited to come along for the chance of winning ‘big’ prizes’, 21st Lunch with C&NW. By now the VMCC AGM will have taken place and our Section member Andy Royle will be confirmed as the new North West Area Rep. Congratulations Andy we look forward to future collaboration with all North West Sections.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2024
The winter months are dragging on but by now we should be looking forward to the first Spring rides. Coming up this month Tuesday 5th Lets Eat Breakfast, Thursday 21st Club Night with a talk from our Chairman, Bob Moon, recounting his time on the high seas. Our first official calendared ride is Mikes Spring Run on Sunday 24th March, starting from Nantwich Lake at 10.30am. Still time to get a proxy vote in for the VMCC AGM! Approx 80 miles and 25 year rule will be applied. Photo shows Dave Mackie and his 1975 Triumph T100, worthy winner of the Weaver Shield.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2024
February is upon us so I’ve used my crystal ball to send you this update. Our AGM last month saw the return of the Committee, the usual suspects, for another 12 months. Annual Awards went to Dave Mackie, Paul Wenlock and Chris Corrigan. This year will see the continuation of the points system to help determine the winners so make sure you sign in for any events you attend – the older the bike the more points you get. Coming up this month Tuesday 6th Lets Eat Breakfast, let’s see you there. Thursday 15th Club Night is a quiz presented by Peter Stott. If you don’t receive my emails or the newsletter but would like to, get in touch and I’ll add you to the list. Photo shows one lucky member of the Cheshire Cats.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2024
A very Happy New Year to all VMCC members from the Cheshire Cats. 2024 promises to be another full year of rides and events. The calendar is published on our website and the VMCC portal. All members are invited to come and join us and enjoy a warm welcome with rides to suit all styles. In December our Christmas Meal was a great success and thanks go to Bernie Horrigan for his efforts in organising it. At the recent CCats Committee meeting we discussed membership and were encouraged by the modest increase in members over the past three months despite a considerable number of members lapsing. Also the decision was made to be more stringent in requesting membership cards at our events – you have been warned! Coming later this month on 18th is our Annual AGM and another chance for you to have your say. Before that it’s the Lets Eat breakfast on 2nd Jan.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – December 2023
Storm Babet has just blown through as I write this and it still seems a bit early to wish a very warm Season’s Greetings to all Cheshire Cats and VMCC members across the country – but there you go; I’ve done it now. Sad to report the passing of two of our members last month, John Hodgson and Keith Elson. John will be remembered for his immaculate restorations, Sunbeam, BMW etc and Keith as a long serving member for his support for our local runs over many years. Our condolences go to their family and friends.
Coming up this month Lets Eat Breakfast on the 5th and also the Christmas Meal on Thursday 14th December. If you haven’t booked there may still be time if you get in touch with Bernie. AGM and Awards Evening coming up in January – any items for the agenda to me ASAP. Congratulations to Andy Royle who is taking over from John Holt as NW Area Rep.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – November 2023
Wet weather again took its toll over September, with rides rescheduled or cancelled. Those that did go ahead provided the usual mix of opportunity for the vast range of bikes that we have in the Section. The Goostrey Run, several runs into Wales (pre-20mph!), a visit to the Oil Can Café, the revealing of several obscurities on the Mystery Tour and tea and cake at Bunbury Mill for the Tiddlers. As we approach the winter months the rides get fewer and garage time increases, especially for the dedicated band of members that seem somehow to have cornered the market in MZ’s – who fancy’s a Blue Smoke Run next year? Coming up 7th Nov Lets Eat Breakfast, 16th Nov Clubnight and maybe time to throw in a late ride if the weather allows.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – October 2023
The month started off with a wet Whitley, 33 intrepid riders suitable clad in waterproofs turned out, it didn’t stop them getting wet or enjoying the day. Phil Greens Ecclesbourne Run took place with 20 riders, glorious weather and an unplanned meeting with the Notts and Derby Section in Wirksworth and again at Hulme End. Les Hodgkinson lead the Pontcysyllte Run but “the wrong way round” – another wonderful day out for the Cheshire Cats. Fewer rides in October but we hope to do Falling Leaves, Scenic Peaks and maybe some others. Again, a reminder that if you want to receive our Newsletter get in touch with me and I’ll add you to the list.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2023
Yet another busy month behind us with, in July, 8 Lakes being visited, Sleap airfield along with an historical interlude at Moreton Corbett Castle, pies and ice-cream on the Piescream Run to Ironbridge and a pilgrimage to St Melangell’s Shrine in North Wales. Amongst all these we had breakfast meets, charity bike nights, club night and impromptu runs. With only a few minor mechanicals all went well. Drop off worked like clockwork. In August we will have had Whitley, Ecclesbourne, Pontcysyllte, a Mystery Run and the Carding Shed. Please keep the WhatsApp Ride group clear for info on events. This month look out for Snowdon Loop, Goostrey, Aberdovey, Tiddlers, Barmouth 2, Anglesey and Back. Club night in September is a Noggin and Natter at The Cock on 21st. If anyone is not getting CCats emails or Newsletter please let me know and I can add you to our distribution list.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2023
June Machine Night was well attended with in excess of 45 machines. Award winners included Pete Dawson - Best British, Norton ES2. Andy Hellyar-Brook - Best European, BMW Airhead and Malcolm Cooper Best Japanese Phil Reid Honda 750 Replica (Photo). The landlords Award went to Alex Loader for his immaculate Ducati. July’s club night on Thursday 20th will be an informal bike night, this time with no prizes. Stretton Mill went well and avoided the forecast thunder and lightning. (Photo) Coming up – Sunday 6th The Whitley Run, Wednesday 9th Ecclesbourne, Wednesday 16th Pontcysyllte, Thursday 17th club night – a talk from Martin Williamson on ‘Lubrication’ plus others - see details on the Cheshire Cats Website.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2023
A sad announcement this month as we lost Theo Alberda, a much-loved member of the Section, after a short illness. All our thoughts are with his wife Jill and the family. May and June have been busy months with many of our runs seeing an increase in participants, especially in the good weather. Parkgate, Mow Cop Castle, Berwyns and Wistanstow have all taken place at the time of writing and we now look forward to a full calendar in July. Coming up – Lets Eat Breakfast – 4th, 8 Lakes – 5th. All our runs are now listed on the VMCC portal and can also be found on the Cheshire Cats Website.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2023

Hopefully we will have a few ride-in picnics, no planned route, just a destination.

VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2023
Nothing to report on the riding scene this month. All Section business went well at our annual AGM with reports from Section officials. We also discussed the current issues with the financial performance and associated actions of the Board of Directors of the VMCC and as a result of the discussions there was a unanimous vote in favour of informing the Board that they no longer have the confidence of the members of our section.
Coming up this month – Lets Eat Breakfast Tuesday 7th March 10am and club night Thursday 16th March - Lubrication by Martin Williamson of KEW Engineering. Look out on WhatsApp for any short notice runs early in the month, depending on the weather. Photo? - can you tell me?
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2023
Decembers Lets Eat Breakfast was another good attendance despite the colder turn to the weather. The Christmas Meal at The Smoker was well attended, a big thanks to the team at the pub for looking after the diners. At the CCats AGM the Annual Awards will have been presented and the usual club business discussed. By now you may be aware that we have been rehomed at The Blue Cap, Sandiway CW8 2DR.
Coming up this month – Lets Eat Breakfast Tuesday 7th Feb 10am and Club Night Thursday 16thFeb. VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2023
Problems at The Cock meant that the Bring and Buy had to be postponed to early next year and the October and November club night meetings moved to The Smoker. If the closure at the Cock is permanent your committee is posed to carry out another round of investigations into a new location for our club nights. Bernie has arranged our Christmas Meal at The Smoker also. If you intend to come to the meal, you may just still have time to contact Bernie but spaces will be limited. Contacts and links for this are on our Cheshire Cats Website. You should by now have received the 2023 Cheshire Cats calendar of events – also on our website. Nominations for annual awards to me please. Don’t forget our AGM in January.

VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – November 2022
As the calendar begins to quieten down members have been taking the opportunity to get out on their bikes whilst the weather holds up. Forays into Wales and bimbles round Cheshire have kept many of us active on two wheels. The Tiddlers Tootle visited Bunbury Mill and provided the usual delights in the cake department. Les arranged two rides into Wales one of which took in four crossings of the Clwyds. September club night provided a short taster of the Biker Down course provided by the Cheshire Fire Service – anyone fancy doing the full course? We may organise one if there is enough interest. Full details of the calendar are available on our website and ride reports will appear in the monthly Newsletter.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – October 2022
A busy time of the year with the usual mid-week runs plus the Whitley Run (report and photos elsewhere). Full details of last month’s goings on can be seen in our monthly Newsletter. October club night on Thursday 20th is our annual Bring and Buy so an opportunity to get clearing out those workshops and garages and send some stuff to a new home. Check our calendar for other events in October. Photo shows Ian Coburn (M&HP), winner of the Post Vintage award at Whitley.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2022
Upcoming at this month’s club night with thanks to Geoff Hall is a return visit from The Cheshire Fire Service to promote their ‘Biker Down’ course and maybe a possibility of arranging a course for those that missed the last one or just wish to refresh. Other events can be found on the website calendar. I’m pleased to report that Phil Green is making a good recovery after being taken ill at the start of the RAF Cosford Run. Also, in July the 8 Lakes Run kept on trend with inflation and became the 9 Lakes Run although we were short changed a little as water levels were very low, but as ever still good value.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2022
Upcoming Cheshire Cats events over the next couple of months – Whitley Run 7th August, Goostrey Run 4th September and Tiddlers Tootle 18th September. Also, our regular midweek rides – check the calendar for details. Past months events include our first Nosebleed Run, into the little visited lands beyond the Manchester Ship Canal, led by Stephen Herbert. We re-visited the Astley Mining Museum where yours truly got to ‘drive’ the winding engine – a bit more of a handful than my regular machine! Half the group took a short cut on the way back, guided by Keith across Chat Moss and home in time for the evenings Machine Night at The Cock where Best British went to Pete Brown, Best Japanese to David Oultram and Best European to Alan Whewell.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2022
Another full calendar of events over May but with several date and location changes. A mix of ride styles from 250-mile days out to 40-mile bimbles around country lanes – take your pick. Club nights and ‘Let’s Eat Breakfast’ continue to be well attended. Cheshire Cats 10th Anniversary badges can be purchased from Andy Royle - £3 each or 2 for £5. Coming up next month is our popular Whitley Road Safety Run. Get those old bikes dusted off, topped up and out to Whitley on the 7th August. 25yr rule applies. For more information on our future events and rides check our website calendar and monthly newsletter. The picture demonstrates the effect motorcycling has on you – smiles all round!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2022
Well into spring/summer and we are enjoying our usual jaunts around Cheshire Cat Land having completed, at time of writing, the Tiddlers, Bala, Parkgate Chippy and Mow Cop. A very well attended quiz-night in April provided an excellent evenings entertainment with some new perspective from quizmaster Stephen. We welcomed our visitors from Cheshire and North Wales who this time managed to secure second place with Cheshire Cats taking the title and the beers. Coming up - Let’s Eat Breakfast 7th, Nose Bleed Run 15th, Stretton Water Mill Gathering 19th. Supposedly no magazine in July/August so an early reminder for the Whitley RSR Sunday 7th August – Details on our website calendar. Picture shows the CCats conquest of Mow Cop Castle.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2022
Rides coming up this month include Barmouth Run 11th, Bobs Berwyn Run 15th, Muck and Nettles 18th, Wistanstow 22nd, Peep at the Peaks 25th, Old Stores Run 31st and not forgetting Let’s Eat Breakfast 3rd and Social Evening at The Smoker 10th. If you are not receiving my email updates or the Cheshire Cats Newsletter, please drop me a line with your contact details. Coming up, May club night on 19th is a Noggin and Natter. Looking further ahead June club night will be a machine night with prizes for Best British, Best Japanese and Best European. If shiny bikes float your boat there’s plenty of time to get polishing but don’t start thinking that will guarantee you a prize!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2022
Our monthly breakfast meets will now be at the Let’s Eat Café on the A49 at Whitley. The additional social night at The Smoker was well attended and will continue monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7-7.30pm onwards. On February club night we were treated to an excellent talk by Andy Royle giving us an insight into his time working at Bentley Motors with some surprising facts – who would have thought Skoda’s are better put together than a Bentley! Coming up this month we have the Tiddlers Trot, Llanuwchylln, Red Marley, Parkgate, and Mow Cop Run. Full details on our calendar and in the newsletter.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2022
Januarys AGM went as expected and none of the committee escaped being re-elected. Not only that, members elected Andy Royle on to the committee to suffer with the rest of us. Winners of the two navigation challenges were John Hodgson and John Burgess. If you want to be in with a chance next year, change your name to John. Annual Awards went to Andy Royle, Les Hodgkinson and Alan Crutchley. Full report in the Newsletter. If you want to receive the newsletter directly via email then get in touch with me. J&S on Tuesday 1st March and the years calendar of events starts this month with a ride out to the Wistanstow Show on Sunday 20th and Mikes Spring Run on Sunday 27th. Full details on the CCats website. We are still meeting at the Cock for the foreseeable future but there is a chance of an additional social club night at The Smoker, Plumley.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2022
Not that a lot has happened this month. Covid issues are again having an impact on everyday life. Please check emails for any more any cancellations. We still wait to see if we remain incumbents at The Cock for Feb club night. Coming up we have J&S on Tuesday 1st Feb. Andy Royle is going to treat us to “30 Years of Chaos”, all in the course of one club night on Thursday 17th Feb. Don’t forget the Cheshire Cats Newsletter is available by email and on our website and finally, a magnificent prize for the first person to tell me where this Cheshire Cats photo was taken.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2022
Happy New Year to all Cheshire Cats and VMCC members across the globe! Our host, Julie, at The Cock informed us that she is moving on and we wait to see if we will be as welcomed by the new manager – let’s hope so. Section membership continues to grow – we may need a bigger room! J&S Breakfast Tuesday 4th Jan 10am onwards. Section AGM on club night Thursday 20th Jan 7pm onwards– time to have your say. 2022 CCats Calendar now published on the website, hard copy available at club nights. Recommendations for speakers/activities at this year’s club nights welcomed. A big thankyou to section member Mike Griffiths who has recently stood down from the post of North West Area Rep. All the usual chat and gossip can be found in our regular email Newsletter. Anyone not receiving it can do so by getting in touch with me on the email above.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes –December 2021
A couple of rides cancelled last month but we still enjoyed a J&S Breakfast, Mike’s Falling Leaves Run and Andy’s Scenic Peaks Run. December club night on Thursday 16th sees our usual Festive meal at the Cock@Budworth. If you are not eating with us, you can still come along for a drink and a chat. January’s meeting will be our AGM and nominations for our annual awards and any resolutions should be with me before the end of December. Check out our monthly newsletter for an update on activities over the past month and interesting articles from members workshops – available by email and from the Cheshire Cats website.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes –November 2021
The Goostrey Run was another successful day out for 35 riders as we welcomed entries from many of our surrounding Sections. Midweek rides included the 118 Run, a visit to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and a breakfast meet at J&S Motorcycle Accessories. October club night saw the return of our Bring and Buy and with the coffers suitable replenished after 18 months inactivity. More detailed reports appear in our monthly Newsletter. If you would like to receive it via email please get in touch. November club night Thursday 18th – make sure you get your Christmas meal orders in to reserve your places.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes –October 2021
45 riders at the 50th Whitley run on 1st August and hopefully a report somewhere in this issue of the journal. Also, a re-run of the first Cheshire Mystery tour taking in a number of less well visited gems of Cheshire and later in the month saw our return to the Peaks, visiting two Heritage Railways, Churnet Valley and Ecclesbourne. A glorious run led by Phill Green, spectacular scenery and great roads. Our club night meeting in August was something like the old normal and gave us the opportunity to welcome many new faces. Coming up in October – 2nd Mikes Less Travelled Lanes, 5th J&S Breakfast, 6th Cheshire Ring, 13th Scenic Peaks and 21st Club Night at the Cock.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2021
Some cracking rides out in July, RAF Cosford (photo), J&S Breakfast, 8 Lakes Run, Sleap Airfield, and another well attended club night amongst some of the events - thanks to everyone who led one. As I write this Stephen is leading a group to The Old Stores, Pontblyddyn and tomorrow Andy is repeating his Piescream Run. Can we really fit in any more rides? Probably - ideas anyone? The Cheshire Cats Monthly Newsletter has been well received and continues in production. If you are not getting our email updates, including the Newsletter, please get in touch and I will add you to the distribution list.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2021
Early in the month we will celebrate the 50th running of the Whitley Road Safety Run. Sadly, we lost long standing member and founder of the Whitley, May Taylor. She will be dearly missed. Throughout June we enjoyed a number of rides and meets, too many to show here but reports will be in the monthly newsletter and on our website. Upcoming rides in August, all still very much dependant on restrictions in place, Whitley Run 1st, J&S Meet 3rd, Cheshire Mystery Tour 5th, Ecclesbourne 10th, Club Night 19th, Barmouth2 20th, Stretton Watermill 22nd, 118 Run 31st. Full details on our website. Any members not receiving emails? Get in touch with me.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2021
Throughout May we have continued to organise social rides. We held our first breakfast/lunch meet at J&S Accessories, Delamere. The weather didn’t help and only a few hardy souls turned out to fly the flag however our new Cheshire Cats pin badges sold well, get yours next time we meet. May Club night also proved to be a bit wet but the Cock kindly allowed us to use the meeting room, under social distancing rules. A much-needed chance to socialise for the first time in over 12 months. Planning is underway for the 50th Whitley Run on 1st August and Malcolm is working on the Goostrey Run for 5th September, both runs ideal for all classes of VMCC eligible bikes. More imminently in July, - Mikes 4 Counties Canter 4th, J &S Meet 6th, 8 Lakes Run 8th, Sleap 13th, Club Night 15th, Piescream 22nd, Shrine 29th. Full details for all events on our website.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2021
In mid-April we finally managed to have our first run of the season with the Muck and Nettles Run led by Mike Griffiths – expect wet feet if you go out with Mike. Stephen ventured out with a party to Parkgate Chippy, Andy took a group up to the Peak District and an additional run to Parkgate, and Richard delivered another Mystery Tour of Cheshire. The Rule of 6 has been a bit limiting with the runs but we should be well past that by now. Coming up later in the year are all our major events – the Whitley Road Safety Run, Stretton Water Mill Gathering, and the Goostrey Road Safety Run. On 19th September we are involved with the North West Region 75th Anniversary Event more of which should be advertised elsewhere in this month’s journal. Sign up to our WhatsApp group for notification of our short notice runs.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2021
Fingers crossed many of us will have ventured out on some COVID secure, rule of 6 rides with fellow section members. It shouldn’t be beyond us to organise a number of simultaneous runs on a week day or weekend. Between us we have a vast library of pre-planned runs around the area so if you fancy leading a group of 6 out this month get in touch with me and we can make plans. Bob’s Shropshire Saunter coming up, post-lockdown, which might even find its way to join the C&NW Llangollen Gathering on 27th June. Another Chairman’s Challenge on the way – just like the photo of a beautiful Norton ES2 nearby – I mean, who wouldn’t want one like that?
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2021
As we approach, what for most of us is, the ‘riding season’ it would be helpful to update the Cheshire Cats contact list. Please let me know if you are not receiving my Section emails and would like to. WhatsApp and text groups are also available. Let’s hope as the weeks go by and restrictions ease that we can all get out to support the Cheshire Cats events that are allowed to take place. In the meantime, try a Zoom meeting with us – Bob Moon treated us, at the last one, to an enlightening talk about his ‘interesting’ past – all within the official secrets act of course! In addition to the calendared events the North West Area Sections are arranging a 75th Anniversary event on 19th September at the Junction Pub, Rainford to include a variety of rides and static displays. Details will be published soon.
Keep safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2021
Writing in January, restrictions continue, projects are taking shape and plans are being made. A big thanks to Rob Randall who is hoping to organise additional section meetings for lunch at J&S Accessories as soon as restrictions allow – keep an eye out for announcements. John Hodgson has started his restoration of a BMW R67 (picture somewhere close). Anyone able to share technical advice? I can put you in touch with him if you can help. If you are not receiving my emails or you wish to be added to the WhatsApp group or text list please get in touch and I’ll get it sorted.
Keep Safe
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – Feb 2021
Thank you to those Cheshire Cats that raised a toast on the December club night – it definitely was a ‘different’ Christmas Meal. Hopefully we can make up for it next year. Chairman’s Challenge winners and runners up received prints to hang in their man-caves. Pump Challenge and Treasure Hunt winners will get their Cheshire Cats mugs just as soon as we can meet again. If you‘ve been working on a ‘winter project’ since the first lockdown we will be expecting to see it out and about this year in pristine condition. Why not share your engineering works on our Facebook page or an article for our website and let us all see what’s been going on.
Keep Safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – Jan 2021
Happy New Year to members far and wide – get those bikes ready for post vaccination riding and socialising when the restrictions are eased. Our first Zoom club night back in November was a big success with Paul Wolf sharing his adventures of a 3 year Atlantic trip on his 35’ yacht, thanks Paul. Also, thanks to other members who have offered to step up and share their (not necessarily motorcycle related) tales – either virtually or when we get back to normal meetings. Congratulations to all the winners of our three Challenge events – results and photos are on our website- prizes are being sorted. Later this month is our AGM – likely to be slightly different and possibly virtual. Any resolutions or nominations for our annual Section Awards (see website) should be with me before January 10th. Hope you all enjoyed our Christmas Meal and were able to share your culinary successes on WhatsApp or Facebook.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – December 2020
Many CCats have continued socially distanced riding into the Autumn while the reasonable weather held, including trips to Anglesey (pre Welsh lockdown) and also up into the dales of Derbyshire. It may be that we have had a Zoom club night by now. If that went well look out for future attempts, possibly even the AGM. The preparations for our virtual Christmas Meal are well in hand. Your own choice of menu but Rob has prepared a ‘special’ which is posted on our website. The photo nearby is a reminder of what Wales looks like!
Keep safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – November 2020
With further restrictions being imposed in September it is apparent that our normal club nights will be on hold for at least 6 months, unless things change for the better. Look out for emails and messages regarding an alternative Christmas meal and AGM, things are being planned by the committee! Our events calendar for next year should, by now, be available on the CCats website (soon the VMCC website). All events will be subject to change should Covid-19 still continue to dominate our lives. On a happier note the picture close by shows some Cats on a recent mystery tour of Cheshire. Time to get those bikes fettled for a fantastic year’s riding in 2021!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – October 2020
Unfortunately, the battery is flat in my crystal ball – who knows, in these times, what we will be doing over the next months. Augusts ‘Piescream Run’ was a blast, Bobs Challenge continues and the email quiz is still running. Our outdoor August Club night /Machine night held under Covid conditions at the Cock@Budworth attracted a much better than expected turnout. Hopefully you will have made it to a repeat of this in September. October club night is still under review as we cannot be sure of good weather for an outdoor meeting. One thing that will still be ongoing as you read this is the Pump It Up Challenge - 24 village water pumps, troughs or wells around our area. Some in good order others not so – get out there and get photographing – with your bike of course. Details on the Cheshire Cats website. No prizes, just good riding – enjoy.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2020
Hopefully we will have started our regular mid-week runs this month. The first one is being headed up by Andy Royle as I write these notes, the long awaited ‘Piescream Run’ down to Ironbridge for, yes, pies and ice cream. Faint green shoots of optimism as far as club nights go, with the pub on the verge of re-opening. Fine details to be discussed with the landlady regarding Covid safe procedures. Will anyone turn up? Keep a look out for emails and social media posts for updates. The CCats Challenge has been going well with the Peckforton Elephant being treated to a paparazzi lifestyle over the past weeks.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2020
As we approach the end of June restrictions are easing and more of us are getting out on informal rides in small groups and also enjoying Bob’s Challenge – 12 locations around Cheshire – best photo of a bike – incredible prizes available. Details on the website or get in touch with me. Still plenty of time, deadline 30th October. We have made the disappointing decision to call off our usual organised events, The Whitley Run or The Goostrey Run. Keep an eye on emails, CCats website and Facebook for alternative events. Over the past month much use has been made of the weekly virtual quizzes and the WhatsApp group has remained busy. Sadly, at the end of May we unexpectedly lost Malcolm Carnegie to a fatal heart attack - 24 (socially distanced) machines provided a cortege to his funeral at Little Budworth. An obituary will follow.
Keep Safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2020
Over the past month we would normally have enjoyed a ride to visit C&NW Section at their Llangollen Gathering, M&HP for their Phil Barton Run, our own Stretton Water Mill gathering, a Shropshire Saunter down to Sleap, a ride up into the Berwyns to see the bluebells and of course Junes Machine Night at the Cock of Budworth. All of these events are normally very well attended and give us a good chance to explore the local highways and byways with our friends and fellow riders. The photo shows one of these events – which one? No answers required, just give yourself a pat on the back if you know. Some members have been getting out on their bikes as the restrictions begin to lift and as I write this month’s notes, sitting in glorious sunshine, hopefully further easing gives hope that when the time is right, we can attempt some socially distanced meetings. Fingers crossed!
Keep Safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2020
It seems like we will have to cope with the consequences of Covid19 for some time to come. Let’s hope that the possibility of some relaxation of restrictions, in whatever small way, may allow us to begin enjoy some riding time. The regular quizzes you have been receiving seem to have been popular with some of you and a dedicated bunch of quizzers are vying for first place, although at the moment Rob Randall is running away with it. Even if you are not sending an entry in for marking, I hope you are all enjoying the varied challenges set. OK, from the photo – Where are these cheery chappies of to? Could be a prize in it for you if you’re quick!
Keep safe.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2020
Well Covid 19 has really thrown our activities into disarray all across the country. At the time of writing we are all confined to the garage for some extra maintenance of our fleet or essential cataloguing of our stock of nuts, bolts, rivets, spanners, lubricants etc. Hopefully all Cheshire Cats are in good health and as the weeks go on we begin to see a return to normality. We have several run organisers champing at the bit for the first opportunity to get out and about again. A photo somewhere near here should bring back memories of more active times in Cheshire Cats land. Keep safe everyone.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2020
£345 raised at Februarys Bring and Buy – thanks Derek and all who parted with money. Unfortunately, the Wistanstow Show was cancelled this year but our talk on March club night from Bernard Dennis on the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater was well attended and we have had a couple of our regular social runs. Other than that March was a quite month. Upcoming events include a run to Llanuwchylln to meet C&NW for lunch at the Eagles pub (always a good feast), Sunday 5th April, start from Prees Heath 10.30am. Clubnight on 16th is a Noggin and Natter, and our first Tiddlers Trot of the year is on Saturday 18th April, starting from Nantwich Lake at 10.30am. Sunday 3rd May our checkpoint for the Founders Relay Rally will be at J&S Accessories from 10.00am. All details on the VMCC portal or Cheshire Cats website. Keep your ears and eyes on WhatsApp notifications for any mid-week excursions.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2020
Our first calendared run of the year to the 2020 Wistanstow Show has now been cancelled. The show organisers have decided to make it a biennial event and it is planned to return for 2021. Consequently, we’ll have some time on our hands – look out for alternative rides that might be in the pipeline - our website and Facebook page will have up to date information, or contact me. In another late change to our calendar we held our annual Bring and Buy at last months meeting. Thanks go to Derek Thom for making it another successful and entertaining evening. At the March meeting we welcome back Bernard Dennis to complete his trio of presentations, this time on ‘The life and times of Sir Thomas Egerton – Keeper of the Queens Conscience’. Who said we Cheshire Cats are not a cultured bunch? Also Mikes Spring Run – Saturday 21st March – see website/events book.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2020
If all has gone smoothly the Section AGM will have passed without any serious harm being done and the current/new committee will be planning lots of excellent things to do in 2020. This time of year is usually quiet for all but the most dedicated motorcyclists. Most of us will have spent more time in the shed/garage than out on the road but hopefully some new projects will see the light of day over the next few months. This month Stephen will be taking over the quiz masters podium for our annual picture quiz, all welcome to come and challenge the current champions! Any newish members of the section that have not received their machine badge please collect one from me at club night. That all for now and here's to seeing you at next months meeting on 20th Feb and then on our first official run, Wistanstow Bike Show on 15th March.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2020
More sad news this month with the passing of David Dawson towards the end of October last year. A stalwart supporter of the Cheshire Cats Section, his cheerful character will be sadly missed at club nights. Hope you are all making progress on preparation of those machines for the upcoming VMCC season – not long to go now. Later this month is our AGM and Awards Evening – your chance to have your vote and your say. Any nominations for committee members or Section Awards should be with me before January 16th (club night). Another successful Christmas meeting at the Cock last month where 43 members enjoyed a meal and numerous raffle prizes. Photo nearby of memories of last year.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – December 2019
During Novembers club night we enjoyed a presentation by Colin Edmundson on 'the Engineering Excellence of the River Weaver' in which we learned about the pontoon swing bridges and turbine operated lock gates amongst other things. Throughout the year we have put a record number of miles under our collective belts as Cheshire Cats. The current figure is 30 organised rides and events throughout the season with 48 riders taking part in mid week and weekend runs. Well done everyone. Check the VMCC portal and our own website for the runs already planned for next year. Light on motorcycling now as the winter draws in and our attention shifts to those restoration/repair jobs that have been taking a back seat. Later this month its our Christmas Meal on the 19th December – anyone not signed up for the meal is still welcome to attend for the chat.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – November 2019
With summer long gone it seems an age ago since we enjoyed the Goostrey Run (wet) and our first Tiddlers Run (wet). If all has gone to plan there should be some reports and photos in this issue. On September club night we were treated to a very interesting talk from Norman Corke from Merseyside and Cheshire Blood Bikes (photo). Our Last of the Summer Wine runs continue to attract good numbers, 18 on the latest when we paid a return visit to the Oil Can Cafe at Holmfirth courtesy of Bernie. The Christmas meal at The Cock is booked and places have already been reserved. Still some space if you're quick, see Cheshire Cats website or contact me.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – October 2019
Sad news to start off my first section notes as Secretary, on 7th August, section member Neil Walton passed away. Neil was very active on two wheels, both powered and peddled - he will be sadly missed. Stephen stood down as Section Secretary last month and I would like to thank him for his seven years of dedication. He is remaining on the committee and will still be active within the section. The Whitley Run, Goostrey and Malcolm's Speedway visit (see photo) will have taken place by now but there is still time to get to our last official event of the year, Bobs Tiddlers Run, see website.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – September 2019
A very full July was preceded by a RealClassic meet in Pontblyddyn and on to A&D in Denbigh, then Richard’s ‘many lakes’ Run, Mike’s ‘many counties’ Run (there’s a theme here somewhere!), Bob’s Shropshire Saunter then Bob’s StM’s Chapel Run. All well attended, particularly the mid-weekers. There’s a pic of one of Richard’s lakeside stops here. We’re in process of restructuring CCats Committee to release me. Richard will become Secretary and BobM Chairman. Thanks Both!
Don’t forget the Goostrey Run 1st September and Bob’s Tiddler Run on 15th plus a few mid-weekers!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – August 2019
Was June the wettest one ever…? It certainly felt so! A few braved the clouds for the Llangollen and the Phil Barton Run. Our June Club/Machine night was well attended and the local RE dealer brought a brace of new Enfield demonstrators (including the new Twins) which were tried by 12 riders. Best Bike was John Hodgson’s beautiful Sunbeam S7deluxe (see pic) and Best Jap was Ross’ Kawasaki 500. Stretton Mill Gathering attracted 50 bikes. Thanks Bob & Ozzy Al!
August will see the Whitley Run and some midweek trips – see WhatsApp.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – July 2019
We had some Good Days Out recently. Parkgate for fish’nchips (it didn’t rain!). Breakfast at J&S (it rained!). Bob’s Berwyn Run (fantastic day with great scenery, great company, 23 bikes and a great lunch in Glyn Ceiriog). Barmouth via Lake Vrnwy (very sunny, more fish‘nchips).
Richard and I did the May VMCC Training Day. Fab day; everyone should do it! Pic here of Richard being ‘trained’ on the Dreadnought.
July sees Bob’s rescheduled Shropshire Saunter and Mike’s ‘several counties’ run and more LotSWine runs. Get on CCats WhatsApp group for more info!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – June 2019
In April 13 intrepid CCats rode to Llanuwchllyn to meet C&NW for lunch. A very good day it was too! Then MikeG led a Tiddlers Trot from Nantwich; pic attached – quiz: spot the Tiddler! Clubnight was Richard’s picture quiz. 2 teams visited from C&NW and once again CCats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, but only by a tie-breaker after we drew in the last round!
In June we will do Llangollen, Phil Barton Run, Machine (Club)Night, Stretton Water Mill Gathering and Bob’s Staffordshire Saunter (plus lots of mid-week Runs!).
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – May 2019
£294 raised at our February b&b, and another entertaining talk from Bernard Dennis at March clubnight, on Bridgwater canal. March saw forays out into the early Spring weather including Wistanstow Show (see photo), Mike’s Spring Run and North Staff’s Oatcake Run. April has seen us joining C&NW for lunch at The Eagles pub in Llanuwchylln, our first Tiddlers Trot and a mega Picture Quiz at clubnight 21st - Reading this in May we are all well into our riding season and will be looking forward to more mid-week runs and established events.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – April 2019
Our February Clubnight was given over to our annual Bring’nBuy featuring Derek Thom as the Greatest Showman, selling All Manner of Tatt at knock-down bargain prices. Very successful it was too, raising just under £300 for Club Funds, which will probably buy a projector for our future meetings. Many thanks to all who brought, bought or both and a special thanks to Derek for an exhausting stream of one-liners during the event as well as being a great Auctioneer!
The big ride this month is Big Brekkie to Llanuwchlyn to meet C&NW on 7th April. Details on the website or call me/Richard. Weather permitting, we should be starting our Last of the Summer Wine mid-week Runs too. Look out on WhatsApp or texts for announcements!
April Clubnight features a fiendish Powerpoint Projected Picture quiz, courtesy of Richard. Get swatting Chaps!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – March 2019
We held our 6th AGM on 17th January. Hard to believe Cheshire Cats have been going so long…! No change in the three Club Officers so you’re stuck with us for another year but we did confirm Alex, Bernie and MalcolmR as additional committee members. Welcome All! Minutes on the website.
As you read this you’ll be contemplating the start of the Riding Season. Our first social ride of the season, courtesy of Mike Griffiths (thanks Mike!) is his Spring Run on 10th March starting at Nantwich Lake. Second ride is 17th March to the Wistanstow Show. Third ride is Big Brekkie to Llanuwchlyn to meet C&NW on 7th April. Details on the website or call me/Richard.
March Clubnight features a talk on The Bridgwater Canal by Bernard Dennis (he told us about English Longbows last year, so it should be good!)
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – February 2019
By the time you read this, our Christmas Meal will be a dim and distant memory (we had a great time, see pic!). Many thanks Richard & Gill for organising a great event! I handed out the events booklet which I am sure everyone has been studying since...? Talking of events our first ones of 2019 are not far off. Mikes Spring Run on 10th March and the Wistanstow Show on 17th. Details in the booklet/website.
Don’t forget the CHANGE OF VENUE FOR CLUBNIGHTS. Meetings are now at The CockAtBudworth pub. Please pass on the news.
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2019
The big news this month is a CHANGE OF VENUE FOR CLUBNIGHTS. Members voted with their feet to leave the Rugby Club. Meetings from now onwards at the CockAtBudworth pub. There’s an advert elsewhere in this edition with the details. Please pass the news on to anyone else you know.
January’s meeting is also our AGM and annual award ceremony.
The VMCC Calendar of Events has a list of all runs and other events for 2019.
Finally, here’s a reminder of a great day out last year – same this year?!
VMCC Cheshire Cats Section Notes – January 2020
