Some suggestions for accessing eBooks in .epub format

The epub file format used here is probably the most widely available eBook presentation and is compatible with most devices and apps. The most realistic  simulation of the printed page is via dedicated eBook readers using e-ink screen displays (e.g. Rakuten Kobo, Amazon Kindle, Barnes Noble Nook, etc.). Most of these readers accept .epub files, although Amazon's Kindle readers will not.  (NB If purchasing an older model e-reader second hand, ensure the model you are buying is still supported, or known firmware workarounds are available to circumvent any problems - many manufacturers are progressively withdrawing support from their older models in an attempt to force readers to upgrade to newer ones)

Android devices are generally well-served, with many e-reader applications available for tablets and smartphones via Google Play or other .apk sources (you will need to enable external sources via your Settings  app to install .apks or .xapks directly - see the Home Page for the article on 'Managing your Android Apps' for details) . The read quality on Android devices is normally very good, but any LED screen will carry a risk of eye-strain if used over long periods, particularly if the screen size is small (i.e. less than ca 5 inches). Apple products have similar e-reader app availability - see online for details.

If you wish to view .epub files via your PC, Adobe Digital editions may already be installed and is compatible with this format. There are many other pc apps (e.g. FB reader) available to download, which will provide an alternative if required.

If you have a sizeable collection of e-books, I recommend installing additional e-book management software to your pc. The best available package is Calibre - this software  is free to download and will manage large collections efficiently. It will also connect directly with dedicated e-readers for easy file transfer, allowing you to minimise the number of books actually stored on your device. This will speed up your reader and avoid loss of data. Calibre also allows single or batch  conversion between .epub and other e-book formats (e.g. .mobi or .azw for compatibility with Kindles), and  also provides a rendering option which allows you to view and read your books directly, thus avoiding the need to install any other reader apps.
