I recited 2 monologues for the above video. My perferred name is Callisto, which is why I had said that name instead of my legal name. The first monologue was one that I wrote, which was called "Grades" and the second is a an excerpt from a monologue from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
I have completed a total of 70 hours in theatre in various different activities at Maryvale. I have also seen various plays as well.
I would plan my project a bit better so that it would be more organized. I would also maybe try to familiarize myself to this new format prior to the project so that I could make this project better. I would also research more into the time period of play I did my designs or to better capture the scene more accurately. Shakespeare was especially hard for me because of the language, so next time maybe I could dissect the lines more to get the full picture and feel.
Since I had to memorize a lot of scripts for the shows I was in, I had to quickly adapt and form a schedule so that I could balance my work evenly to accomplish all of it on top of learning how to memorize something in the first place. So my organization skills have improved from it, as well as my memorization skills. Both of those are very important for the other areas of my high school career.
One of my monologues I performed was a Shakespearean monologue, as said before, which dates back a few centuries. It’s so interesting to have such old work still being performed today. Hamlet was written in the early 1600s, and although it’s been 400 years, basically every actor or even day to day people know of it. I think having a Shakespeare monologue as part of my capstone shows how old theatre is, and how sacred it could be as both an art form and a tie back to where we came from. We obviously are in a different time, but knowing that we can go to a theatre and more or less see the same play being performed as it did 400 years ago is really amazing.
The first thing I had to do was create a monologue, and after getting a bit of inspiration from my friends, I wrote a monologue based on a character I had created prior. Then, I had to choose a Shakespearean monologue. Since in my highschool education I had gone over Hamlet two separate times, I thought that would be the best option for a monologue that I completely understood. This was my first Shakespearean monologue I’ve had to perform, and, though I am a fan of being bold and risky, I didn’t want to put too much risk on a monologue I had to put together in a relatively short time. Especially when the language was as complex as a old Shakespearean English. After I managed through that, I had to create a design morgue, which was slightly easier since the time period of the play was the teen years for my siblings.
