Timeline

This timeline displays the publication history of Kidnapped when it was first serialized in Young Folks Paper, spanning two volumes (vol. XXVIII to vol. XXIX) and fourteen issues (no. 805 to no. 818) in 1886. At the time, YFP was printed and published weekly by James Henderson at Red Lion House. Illustrations are by William Boucher. The main illustration of each installment is depicted on each issue’s cover page and an image of it appears next to corresponding description on the timeline (although the illustration of the final installment, vol. XXIX, no. 818, pertains to another story called The Fer-de-Lance Guard). Facsimiles for each installment provided by the University of South Carolina University Libraries are linked to each slide of the timeline.

Although facsimiles are not included in the timeline due to inaccessibility, a later version of Kidnapped revised for Stevenson's sequel story Catriona was published in 1893 in another British magazine, Atalanta. The two stories were published together in 1895 in a collected edition as The Adventures of David Balfour.
