Three techniques for hiding identity in an image — and they are not interchangeable.
The Core Difference
These three methods sit on a spectrum of protection strength. Blurring softens detail while keeping the scene's general shape and color — it's the lightest touch and, correspondingly, the weakest protection. Pixelation replaces fine detail with visible blocks, hiding compact identifiers like faces or plates more thoroughly, though it can still leak information if the blocks are too large relative to the detail or the coverage is incomplete. Redaction applies a fully opaque mask over the region, permanently removing the underlying visual information — it's the strongest and most unambiguous of the three, at the cost of looking the most obviously "censored."
Blurring
Blurring works by softening the transitions between pixels (typically a Gaussian blur), smearing detail without fully destroying it. It keeps footage watchable and natural-looking, which makes it popular for secondary, low-risk elements in a frame. The tradeoff: a light blur can sometimes be partially reversed or enhanced with modern image-processing and AI techniques, and regulators don't automatically treat a blurred face as "anonymized" for legal purposes if the blur is weak or inconsistent. Best used for: background details, incidental and low-risk bystanders, or situations where a fully opaque box would be visually disruptive.
Pixelation
Pixelation (mosaic censoring) breaks the region into large blocks of averaged color, which is the classic "face blurred for TV" look. Done with a strong enough block size and complete coverage, it reliably hides fine facial features and plate numbers while still signaling to the viewer that something was intentionally obscured — a widely recognized visual cue. The risk is in the execution: blocks that are too small, or a mask that doesn't fully cover the moving subject frame to frame, can still leave enough of an outline or partial detail for someone to guess who it is. Best used for: faces, license plates, and other compact, well-defined identifiers where you want a clear "this was redacted" signal without a solid black box.
Redaction (Masking)
Redaction applies a fully opaque covering — a solid box or shape — that completely and irreversibly removes the underlying visual information. There is no partial reconstruction risk because the original pixels are gone from the visible output entirely. This is the standard for text, documents, ID numbers, addresses, on-screen confidential information, and the highest-risk identifiers, such as footage involving crime victims, medical situations, or minors in sensitive contexts. The tradeoff is aesthetic and contextual: a solid box removes shape and motion cues along with the identity, so it's a poor fit when you want the audience to still follow a person's movement or expression.
How to Decide
Start by asking how sensitive the identifier actually is, how far the footage will travel, and whether you need to meet a specific legal or regulatory anonymization standard rather than just a visual preference. When you're protecting a face, a plate, or anything else that could realistically re-identify someone, default to pixelation or full redaction rather than a light blur — the visual softness of a blur isn't worth the compliance risk if that footage ends up scrutinized later. Reserve blur for genuinely low-stakes, incidental detail where the goal is de-emphasis rather than true anonymization.
