When the French began to control Cochinchina in 1862, they built and expanded urban infrastructure in Saigon and Gia DInh. Binh Thanh area is gradually urbanized.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Binh Thanh began to develop more strongly with the appearance of roads, housing, markets, and public facilities.

From 1954 to 1975:
After the French withdrew their troops, the Binh Thanh area belonged to Gia Dinh province during the Republic of Vietnam period.
During this period, Binh Thanh developed with many new residential areas forming, especially along major roads such as Bach Dang, Phan Dang Luu, and Dien Bien Phu. This area becomes the connection between Saigon Center and surrounding areas.

From 1975 to Now
Many residential areas, transportation infrastructure, and housing projects were erected . Bình Thạnh quickly became a crowded district and developed strongly economically.
Binh Thanh nowadays One of the key districts of HCM City with large urban development projects such as Thanh Da area, Vinhome Central Park, Landmark 81.
With its potential, Binh Thanh district is believed to develop further and will become one of the largest economics in HCM city.
