Sober island was first occupied by the French."Admiral Jacob De La Haye" in 1672 and by "Admiral Suffren" in 1782.The British took over the island after the Treaty of Paris in 1784 and later devoloped it for thire military requirements and was essentially a military establishment.however before the British occupation of the island,The Dutch also forged a Tug-of-war with the French to Claim the island.
The island was named as "Sober" in memory of late young British Lieutenant S.Sober.As Trincomalee become the home of the British Eastern fleet during the World war 2,the British fortifield the island with a battery of guns.it's written in past conicals that Trincomalee was heavily defended againts the Japanese Navy with the help of heavily artillery batteries located on the Sober island.Also during the World War 2,the island was a transit station for thousands of soldiers en-route to far East and the Mediterranean.
The 175 acre island elevating nearly 200m from the sea level was called "Isle Du Soliet"by the french meaning "Island of Sun" which was developed by Sri Lanakan Navy as per the two site plans drawn in 1919 and 1922.The island is not merley touristic in appeal but contain relice of a bye gone era magnifying,its appeal as a much sought after destinations.There are French graves,World War 2 gun positions,underground ammuntion storage complexes and many more symbole of British occupations.

*From Trinco travel along the Trincomalee Highway passing Kavaddikugh,Neddumkudh and Tirukkaludah to reach the sober island which is situated close to the Trincomalee harbour.
The Nine Arch Bridge also callled the Bridge in the Sky,is a viaduct bridge in Sri Lanka.Its one of the example of colonial-era railway construction in the country.The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local ceylonese builder,P.K.Appuhami,in consultaion with British engineers.
Arguably the best time to venture out would be during when the locomotive come barrelling along and thus it is advisable to check on the train schedule in advance.However,be sure to carry your trustly cam with you so that you might capture every moment that unravels before you.
You have muiltiple options and ways to reach the train bridge.follow to the road to wards Little Adam's Peak and turn left at the small colored temple.Follow lake front cottage on Google map.
For a more quite walk in between the jungle,turn left into the jingle at the parking spots after Art Cafe Umbrella.From here,you have to follow the path for about 10min which gives you a unique view over the bridge.we higjly recommrnd this path.
The quickest way is to walk along the track from Ella town until you reach a tunnel.After passing the tunnel,you immediately reach the Nine Arach Bridge.
The easiest way to get to Nine Arch Bridge is by a Tuk-Tuk ride from a Ella town.To save time,ask them to drop you off near the tunnel and walk to bridge the last piece.
Sunrise is the best time to visit the Nine Arch Bridge.The light is stunning and you avoid the crowds.By 10am,its getting more busy with tourists since it is the start of their day trip tour.
Trains pass the bridge about 6 times a day.(before Covid-19),The exact times change all the time time in Sri Lanka but there shoud be one every hour.Dont worry that you have to wait that long.Its great place to get photograph and there are small cafes where you can buy drinks and food.
