Cyber and Information Security

A note before you dive in: Pricing, audit availability, and free-access programs below change over time — treat anything specific (exam fees, "free" offers) as a starting point to verify on the provider's site, not a guarantee.

For free access at Coursera, only choose the audit option where available — audit isn't guaranteed on every course. Rule for anything hands-on below: only practice against systems and labs you're authorized to use (TryHackMe, HTB, and course labs are built for this) — never real, third-party systems.

Free-access tip for Pakistani students: HEC's Digital Learning Skills & Enrichment Initiative (DLSEI) partners with Coursera to occasionally give free access to full paid Professional Certificates and Specializations — including several cybersecurity ones below (ISC2, IBM). It runs in cohorts with open/closed registration windows, not standing access — check the site periodically before paying for anything on this list.

Suggested path — pick ONE option per step below, don't stack everything:

1. Hands-on practice (start here, always free):
TryHackMe — begin with Pre Security / Complete Beginner rooms, then keep going alongside step 2. Keep your profile public — that's real, checkable portfolio evidence. Skip its paid course-completion certificates; not worth the money.

2. Theory foundation (pick ONE — these overlap heavily):

CS50's Introduction to Cybersecurity (edX, audit) — rigorous, free. OR
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity Specialization — ISC2 has, at times, offered this certification free directly via their own program; check isc2.org to see if that's still active before assuming it applies. Also check DLSEI above for free full-specialization access.

3. Mid-term target — once 1 & 2 feel solid, pick ONE:

IBM Cybersecurity Analyst Professional Certificate (Coursera, audit where available; also check DLSEI above). OR
CompTIA Security+ — the credential most consistently named in job postings and government/defense-adjacent roles. Paid exam, not on Coursera/edX — check current pricing at comptia.org first. This is the one worth spending real money on, when ready — not before.

4. Later / optional, once fundamentals are solid:
AI for Cybersecurity / Generative AI for Cybersecurity Professionals — genuinely relevant to where the field is going, but not a starting point.
