Suspect Interviews - 1

April 13, 2020

The Plot Thickens . . . .

Suspect 1: Helen Lancaster

Wife of the Victim

Helen Lancaster storms out of the interview room, head held high and arms crossed over her chest. She makes her way over to her daughter, talking in low tones as Detective Abergavenny sets a sheet of paper down on the evidence table with a heavy sigh. As she reassures one of the guests, you slip through the crowd, picking up the piece of paper.

With the memories of the interview in your mind and the divorce papers sitting in front of you, Helen’s off-putting behavior towards her late husband makes sense, and you cast a glance at her from across the room. She looks so elegant, so poised in her sweeping black dress, but her eyes seem to glitter with malice.

Could it have been her?

Suspect 2: Hannah Lovelace

Cook for the Lancaster Family

Your attention is diverted from Helen Lancaster as Hannah Lovelace is led into the interview room, and heads turn as she walks. “I didn’t do it,” she says as Detective Abergavenny leads her into the room. Her eyes are rimmed in red.

“We’ll see about that,” Detective Abergavenny says. The door shuts with a soft click.

Hannah Lovelace looks mad when she comes out. “Really a stupid idea, but I guess I’m glad I could help,” she grumbles. She sweeps past Detective Abergavenny, taking a sip of the water she’s been drinking all night. Detective Abergavenny sets another couple of papers on the evidence table. You push your way to the front of the crowd.

Exhibit C: Sonogram

Exhibit D: Letter from Victim to Hannah Lovelace

That would explain why she’s been avoiding the cocktails, and the tiny bump underneath her dress. As you watch her she slouches over, rubbing her bump as she daintily sips her water. Her eyes are still rimmed in red, but you can’t help but remember how angry she acts when any of the Lancasters are around, or the desperation in her voice as she had talked to Keating earlier that night.

Could it be her?

Suspect 3: Mary Lancaster

Daughter of the Victim

“This is really stupid, you know,” Mary Lancaster yells as Detective Abergavenny leads her into the interview room. “I didn’t kill my own dad. But you’re just an amateur, so of course, you’re making mistakes.”

“Just taking precautions,” Detective Abergavenny sighs as she opens the door. “After you.” Mary sweeps into the room, leaving Detective Abergavenny to follow.

“Mom, that was so dumb,” Mary yells as soon as she’s out of the interview room. “I mean, come on. I would, like, never kill Dad. Can we sue this idiot?”

“Unfortunately, no,” Helen says. She glares as Detective Abergavenny sets a laptop on the evidence table. “We’d technically have no grounds.”

A crowd gathers around the computer and you have to wait a couple of minutes to watch but soon it frees up, and you take your chance.

You finish up the vlog, glancing at Mary Lancaster as you pass the laptop to someone else. She’s vlogging again, a trend that you’ve never understood but she seems to enjoy. She seems almost too airheaded to be able to do something so vile, but could it be an act?

And could she truly be that angry as to kill her own dad?

Suspect 4: Kayleigh Abbott

Librarian

Detective Abergavenny leads Kayleigh Abbott to the interview room. They chat amiably, and Detective Abergavenny looks more relaxed. Heads don’t turn quite as much as they did with the other suspects; perhaps Kayleigh isn’t “high-profile” enough for them, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t interested.

The duo is quiet as they step out, and Kayleigh seems to brim with muted anger. The friendly atmosphere is gone between the two of them, and Detective Abergavenny slaps a fat file of papers on the evidence table as Kayleigh wipes at her eyes with a handkerchief. You shuffle through the papers from the file and soon, you feel as though you can see Kayleigh’s entire life story displayed out in front of you.

CONTENTS OF FOLDER:

You look back at Ms. Abbott. She certainly doesn’t look like a killer, in her pretty red dress, with her quiet voice and soft smile. But you can’t ignore what you’ve just seen and suddenly, she’s on your radar.

No, she doesn’t look like a killer, but could what you’ve just seen change that?
