Mind-Body Connection
The mind and the body are not two separate entities (as previously believed) but are intertwined through the mind/body connection. Our biological functioning can impact our emotional functioning as well as our thoughts and beliefs that impact our biological and mental functioning. All of these things can lead to reactions driving stress that impact both mental and physical health.
Research continues to evolve with the current thinking that the mind and body communicate through a complex neural network utilizing hormones and neurotransmitters that can positively and negatively impact physical and mental functioning. There appears to be no real division between the mind and the body due to these communication networks in the body systems.
Embedding mind-body practices into daily life can work to enhance the healthy functioning of the mind-body system promoting health and even reversing the negative effects of stress.
What are mind-body modalities?
Mind-body modalities include different health practices that combine mental focus, breath work, and/or movement to relax the mind and body. They also support creating awareness of how are mind and body are functioning to give insight for positive change. There are many different types of mind-body modalities that can be used for various things, but most importantly to determine what works best for each individual.
Why practice mind body modalities?
As understanding of the connectivity between our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves increases, we gain deeper insights into how our bodies function and heal both physical and emotional pain. This insight also allows us to access to the innate wisdom we all have to heal. Some of the benefits of these modalities include:
Stronger immune systems
Decreased pain
Decreased depression and anxiety
Higher levels of tranquility
Decreased psychological distress, fatigue, and/or exhaustion
Types of Mind-Body Modalities
Breath work
There are many types of breath work individuals can use. For example, diaphragmatic breathing (belly breathing) includes deep breathing to lower heart rate and blood pressure that assists in relaxation of the mind and body. This technique uses the diaphragm to help get more air into the lungs and oxygen into the brain and body.
There are more formal types of breath work from trained practitioners such as Holotropic Breath work. This process involves controlling and quickening breath patterns to influence various mental, emotional, and physical states derived from a spiritual framework.
Creative Arts
Everyone has a creative side and the act of creating can integrate brainwaves to promote feelings of harmony. As a cognitive centered society some may be challenged in the ability to access creative and intuitive sides. The more the left and right hemispheres of the brain is used the more we are accessing our full potential. Further, art may also allow deep emotions and memories to flow through from the unconscious into consciousness.
Energy Work (Acupuncture, Massage, Reiki, EFT)
The human body emits and interacts with various kinds of energy including electrical, magnetic, and light. It is also though that health and disease appear to be related to the flow or lack of flow through energetic systems. Therapeutic touch, healing touch, or Reiki are common energy healing modalities.
Emotional freedom technique (EFT) or "tapping" is an alternative treatment for physical pain and emotional distress. This stems from the belief that tapping the body creates a balance in your energy system to treat pain. Similar to acupuncture, EFT uses tapping meridian points coupled with phrases that acknowledge and accept thoughts to restore balance to your body’s energy. It’s believed that restoring this energy balance can relieve symptoms a negative experience or emotion may have caused. EFT is commonly used to treat individuals experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a technique where the state of awareness is changed creating deep relaxation that leads to improved focus and concentration. Hypnosis is commonly mis-understood from the less of stage hypnosis but clinicians typically lead individuals into a state of self-hypnosis based on pre-determined needs. Although individuals are more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you do not lose control over behavior during a session. Hypnosis has been show very effective with relaxation, pain management, behavioral changes (e.g. eating, smoking), and mental health supports.
Meditation/Mindfulness
There are many forms of meditative and mindfulness practices that help develop intentional focus, minimize random thoughts about the past or future, bringing one into the present moment. These practices can support concentration, relaxation, stress reduction, inner peace, and emotional well-being. Further research has shown meditative practices can reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression and help manage symptoms of chronic pain, disease, sleep and/or digestive problems.
Movement
Yoga is an ancient practice rooted in Indian Philosophy and has become popular as a way of promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The current US practice typically includes physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana). There are also many styles that range from gentle to physically demanding in nature. Health benefits range from improving general wellness, stress and pain relief, and managment of chronic disease.
Tai Chi has been described as "meditation in motion". This practice which originated in China as a martial art has value in preventing and/or treating many health problems. It is a low-impact, slow-motion exercise using movement and breathing with a focus on bodily sensations. The movements are circular and muscles relaxed and can be easily adapted.
Nutrition
The field of nutrition has evolved significantly into "food as medicine". This sits at a crossroads of nutrition and health care through functional medicine moving far beyond the traditional food pyramid. Functional nutrition examines the specific needs, body types, and functioning of the individual to provide support in healing or preventative care.
Relaxation
The Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique supports mentally and physically releasing tension in each area of the body in a progressive fashion. One may start with focusing on feet with squeeing and releasing muscles through breathing to release tension, moving up through the entire body.
Senses
There are various practices that engage all the senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, and sound. Guided imagery is one type of modality that includes picturing a relaxing or healing place. One then imagines themselves in this setting to create awareness around mind-body functioning. One may also use sounds for a similar experience.
