IMBeR Registered as a 'Decade Partner' (seeking clarity on what this means)

How IMBeR aligns with the Decade

The finalised UN Decade Implementation Plan (August 2020) has introduced an additional 'Societal Outcome' - "An inspiring & engaging ocean".

"How should IMBeR Engage in the UN Decade?" summary of survey of SSC (June 2020):

Concluded that for IMBeR the opportunites and benefits outweigh risks of engaging in the Decade
- Opportunites + Benefits = Exposure, Recognition, Legitimacy, Networks, Collaborations, Drive IMBeR to Improve
- Risks = Low Return on Investment, Loss of Focus, Diluting the Brand
IMBeR has limited resources and so we should avoid overcomitting --> partnering on larger initiatives rather than leading, (although leading was identified as a way to mitigate risk of low ROI and diluting theIMBeR brand)
The most suitable level of engagement for IMBeR was identified as being through IMBeR's ACTIVITIES aligning with the Decade rather than initiating new Programmes, Projects, or Contributions (but see note on partnering)
IMBeR should seek Decade endorsement for all IMBeR activities which align to UN Decade, but not seek blanket endoresement for everything, nor should activities be moulded to fit the Decade if this detracts from how they contribute to IMBeR (or to the RP, WG, etc)

Future Earth Coasts - developing proposal for big river delta project/programme to the Decade
SOLAS - Together with IMBeR and others, SOLAS are discussing whether to submit a geoengineering proposal for endorsement as a Decade programme
GOOS started writing something new around integrating observations into the coast, connecting with stakeholder communities and integrated system design
