Virginia's Arts Education Data Project
All Virginia students deserve access to a quality arts education that will help develop important skills to be successful in today's creative workforce. Arts education (defined in Virginia as dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts) is included as part of Virginia's public school curriculum.
Because we know the arts play an important role in developing the skills necessary in the Profile of a Virginia Graduate, several organizations in the Commonwealth have partnered to provide Virginians with access to interactive data dashboards that highlight student enrollment data and longitudinal trends in arts education access and participation. These organizations include the Virginia Coalition for Fine Arts Education, Virginia Department of Education, and the Virginia Commission of the Arts. Through this partnership, data that is collected from VLDS and sent to the Virginia Department of Education has been transformed into a public-facing, interactive dashboard enabling all to see arts education course offerings and student enrollment in Virginia's schools.
These interactive, color-coded dashboards display arts education access and enrollment data for Virginia's K-12 public schools that are reported annually from localities to the Virginia Department of Education. Data from ensuing years will be added annually, allowing the dashboard to show the status of arts education over time. Currently, data from school years 2016-17 through 2022-23 is available on the dashboard.
About the National Arts Education Data Project
The Arts Education Data Project is a national partnership between the State Education Agency Directors of Education (SEADAE) and Quadrant Arts Research. This initiative is accomplished by taking data gathered by each state department of education, standardizing the data, and then transforming it into a publicly available interactive dashboard, updated annually to reflect the true status of arts education in every school, at every grade level for every student.
