Virginia Beach has both rat species that trouble American homes, and they behave so differently

that a treatment which works on one is close to useless against the other.

**Norway rats** are heavy-bodied burrowers with a tail shorter than the body. They nest low —

under slabs, decks and sheds, along ditch banks and tidal creek margins — and enter at ground

level through crawlspace vents, failed access doors and unsealed utility penetrations.

**Roof rats** are slender climbers with a tail longer than the body. The coastal Hampton Roads

environment suits them particularly well. They enter high, using overhanging branches to reach

the roof and exploiting gaps at soffits, ridge vents and plumbing vent boots.

Noise in the attic is roof rats. Noise under the floor is Norway rats. The treatment follows
