Dr. Mwaffo has been promoted to Associate Professor, effective August 2025. In 2024, he received the Department of Defense ASN(RD&A) Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientist and Engineer Award—one of the highest honors in the Naval Research Enterprise. The award recognizes the top 0.001% of contributors for exceptional scientific and engineering impact in support of national defense.

Dr. Violet Mwaffo is an Associate Professor in the Weapons, Robotics, and Control Engineering Department at the U.S. Naval Academy. He previously served as Assistant Professor from 2020 to 2025. He earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from NYU in 2017, where his NSF-funded research focused on data-driven modeling of collective biological behavior. From 2017 to 2020, he was a Chancellor Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder, advancing theoretical and experimental studies in multi-robot systems.
Dr. Mwaffo holds master’s degrees in Mathematics (University of Yaoundé I), Statistics (ENSEA and Université de Versailles), and Financial Engineering (NYU). He also spent five years in the data science industry, supporting statistical capacity building and industrial analytics.
His research spans bio-inspired autonomy, distributed systems, and AI. In 2024, he received the ASN(RD&A) Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientist and Engineer Award, recognizing his contributions to defense innovation.
