Data:

Georeferenced Parishes of the 1872 Brazilian Imperial Census (excel link)

  • Georeferenced dataset at the parish level for the 1872 Brazilian census.

    • Contains each parish as a point (latitude and longitude)

    • Allows for increased sample size when using the 1872 census

  • Names of the parishes' are obtained from the University of Minas Gerais (available here)

    • Can be merged with their dataset by the variable "ParoquiaID".

  •  An earlier version for the states in the North was used for some states in "Jesuit Missionaries in the Colonial Amazon: Long-term effects on Human Capital."

Data Work in Progress:

1890 Brazilian Census - Literacy at the Parish Level (non-georeferenced data available here)

  • Tabulated data for literacy split between men and women and foreign and domestic.

  • Obtained from IBGE (original document).

  • Currently in the process of georeferencing.
