Cataract Surgery

Call your family doctor and advise him/her of your eye surgery. Make an appointment to see your family doctor for a medical clearance (history and physical) 1-2 weeks before the surgery.

Laboratory tests:

Approximately one (1) to two (2) weeks before the surgery, a series of laboratory tests will be done: complete blood count, electrolytes, blood sugar, urinalysis, chest x-ray, and electrocardiogram. Please register at the Campus Surgery Center - 901 Campus Dr. Suite 102. Please call (650) 991-2000 for registration appointment.

Before cataract surgery:

• DO NOT eat or drink anything 8-10 hours before your scheduled surgery. You may take your blood pressure pill with a small sip of water on the morning of the surgery.
• Use antibiotic eye drops and prednisolone acetate as prescribed by Dr. Villanueva.
• Wash your face and eyelids with antibacterial soap (e.g. Dial Soap Gold) and water 4x a day for 3 days before the surgery starting on (as directed) and on the morning of the surgery. Rinse well with water.
• Take a shower or bath and shampoo your hair the night before the surgery or on the morning of the surgery.
• Bring all prescription medications with you to the surgery center on the day of the surgery.

After cataract surgery:

• IT IS IMPORTANT that you keep your appointment with Dr. Villanueva the next day after surgery.
• DO NOT drive your vehicle for 1 week after the surgery.
• USE THE FOLLOWING EYE MEDICATIONS as soon as you get home after surgery:
  • antibiotic eye drops - every 4 hours until bedtime
  • LOTEMAX or PRED FORTE (Prednisolone Acetate 1%) - every 2 hours until bedtime
• IT IS NORMAL to experience a little pain, irritation, burning, tearing, itching and mild blurring of vision after the surgery.
• CALL Dr. Villanueva if you experience severe eye pain.
