Bihar is one of the oldest inhabited place in eastern India. It has a rich culture which is obtained through thousands years of ageing. River Ganga flows through this state which has helped this city to flourish. Gautam Buddha attained nirvana under a Peepal tree or Sacred Fig here only. Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, also took birth and attained nirvana on this land. King Ashoka, who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent, was born here in 304 BCE. There are many places which was built hundred years ago. Bihar was home to some of the most promiment universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila university in its time. Students from Tibet, China, Korea and Central Asia came to study here.
Bihar is also a home to the 200-year old tradition of silk weaving. Bhagalpur(a city in Bihar) is famous for its Tussar silk and its products. India is the 2nd largest producer of tussar silk, much of which is produced in Bhagalpur. You can find a lot of shops and handlooms on the roadside of Tilkamanjhi-Champanagar road. Generations of families are involved in either the production of silk or its products.
Even in modern times, we can still find the linkage with the past. Bihar School of Yoga provides yogic training. The techniques developed there are a fusion of traditional vedantic, tantric, yogic and contemporary physical and mental health sciences. Also, Sonpur mela is one of the biggest cattle fair in Asia which stretches on from fifteen days to one month.
