We hold information meetings at the beginning of each semester, with the goal of recruiting 15 total club members. Our smaller club adequately meets our school's technology needs, and is manageable during our limited meeting time.
Students lead our information meeting and tell their peers about our club, the expectations, and the types of activities we do.
At the end of the meeting, we hand out applications.
Application
Students fill out an application to show their interest in the club, and get a parent signature so parents are aware if/when there are after school activities.
Make a copy of this application.
Interviews
At this point, we do not have an overwhelming number of applications. I simply ask kids if they're willing to commit to the club for the year, then they're in once they turn in their application.
If necessary, we would implement more formal applications to select students.
We use Google Classroom to sent out reminders, collaborate on projects, and keep track of our work. This can easily be replicated on a website or your school's LMS.
We set aside meeting time to practice our customer service skills for when we work with students. We role play working with teachers and students and practice guiding someone while helping (rather than doing it for them).
Beginning in 2017-2018, we will also be introducing a more gamified approach, where students will earn badges and XP (experience points) for attending meetings, showing proficiency with apps and tools, and being trained in customer service.
