Basically, they are the equivalent to the old-style door peephole/door chain but from afar! They allow you to see who is at your door, from anywhere in the house or anywhere in the world!
They have the added benefit of recording who is at the door so even if you miss the person, it’s on video so you can see who they were, what they left (or not left).
Doorbell – they do as any basic doorbell does, someone pushes the button and they let you (or anyone in the house) know that there is someone at the door! They do need a bell in the house for that to happen, and a smart phone to control them.
Movement – when someone doesn’t knock, maybe puts post through or a parcel on the front step, the record all of that as well. They capture a video of anyone that walks up to your door.
Video – as a peephole allows you to see who is there, video doorbells allow you to ”see” who is there via a smartphone. But instead of being right there at the door you can be in another room, in the back garden or on holiday in Spain! There is the ability (in some models) to add internal video devices in your house to view the door if you don’t have your smartphone on you.
Sound / Audio – instead of shouting, or worst opening the door and asking what someone wants, a video doorbell allows you to ask what they want without even being there. Best is you can have a two-way conversation (or just one way listen to what’s happening) and record what is said.
I created this site to cover all the diferent options that people ask me when helping in various forums.
