Methods

"Video-based research: Visualizing multimodality in human interaction"

The working methods of the course include:

  • Pre-assignment (recommended readings);

  • Participants’ brief presentation of their own research and how a video-based research may be relevant to it;

  • Lectures from the organizers (Samira Ibnelkaïd, Iuliia Avgustis) and invited speakers (Lorenza Mondada, Justine Lascar);

  • Workshop activities to better handle the presented concepts, methodology and practices related to video-based research (managing fieldwork and postproduction, using video recording equipment and video editing softwares);

  • A final assignment, by the participants, that highlights the way they can apply the concepts and methodology taught during the course, to analyse multimodal phenomena on their own empirical data.

The participants are provided with reading materials for orientation before the course and to be used as a resource during the workshops and data sessions. Doctoral students receive 3 study points by participating actively in the course and handing in a final assignment that relates the theme of the course to their own research projects (3 ECTS, grading: pass/fail).

Remarks

Given the ongoing situation (coronavirus pandemic), and the organizers’ familiarity with digital tools, this course will be led and completed in a hybrid way; both on-site (Leaf Infrastructure at the University of Oulu) and online (making use of digital platforms both for lectures and teamwork).
