My time in the Dominican Republic was a transformative experience that gave me a new perspective community service. From working at the construction site to participating in medical brigades, I saw firsthand the challenges faced by underserved communities. The work was often physically demanding, but it was fulfilling to contribute to building infrastructure and support healthcare efforts. I learned the importance of resilience and collaboration, especially when language barriers and fatigue made tasks more difficult.Â
One of the most impactful experiences was participating in the medical brigade. It was eye-opening to see how limited healthcare access affects the daily lives of people in the area. From helping with registration to assisting with vitals and pharmacy duties, I witnessed how something as simple as a routine checkup can make a significant difference. It made me realize how important it is to have compassion and dedication when working in service roles, especially in communities where healthcare resources are scarce.
Aside from service, we had opportunities to immerse ourselves in the local culture and enjoy the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic. Whether it was cooling off at the beach after a long workday or zip-lining into the lagoon, these moments of relaxation allowed us to reflect on the work we were doing and bond as a group. The evenings spent sharing stories, playing games, and connecting with each other brought a sense of belonging and unity.
This trip not only deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by underserved communities but also reinforced my commitment to service and leadership. I am grateful for the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and gain new skills. This experience has inspired me to continue seeking opportunities to make a positive impact, both locally and globally.
