Eliot's work provides a curious insight in that her least grammatically complex works (highest "words/sentence" and "ratio") are her most successful ones. This phenomenon is not exclusive to Eliot, or even limited to the realm of literature. For example, in modern music, artists often “simplify” their lyrics to appeal to wider audiences.
