Private Fees

Letters, Reports and Associated Work

• Psychologists can set their own fees, depending on their costs and needs. Running a psychology practice can be costly and private psychologists are only paid for the hours they work in direct client consultations (e.g., 1 hour session) or associated work via private fees.

• The APS (Australian Psychological Society) recommends $318 for a standard 46–60 minute consultation, which many psychologists use as a benchmark Australian Psychological Society for setting private fees for consultations, letters, reports, meetings, court and other work. 

• A standard letter from a psychologist in Victoria typically costs between $88 and $330, depending on length, purpose, and provider. Letters for schools, employers, Centrelink, or medical purposes are usually billed as report preparation, starting at $88 for short letters and increasing with complexity.

• Court-related letters and reports are more expensive, e.g. $330 for a letter of attendance or up to $900+ for a detailed treatment report. Please discuss your needs with the psychologist early to ensure it can be done for you and if not to consult another professional.
