COMPASS DIRECTIONS

The Standard compass has four main points ... North, South, East, West. A very useful tool for directions especially for those who use it regularly. In short, you won't get lost!
My issue however, is it's hard for me to know which direction am facing unless I calibrate myself. If I want to know where North is I have to first check the sun's position... East/West. I will spend another few minutes to determine where North East is or South West!!!
How the confusion starts.... in the movies the action hero is given the direction of the enemy's location... like two clicks due east or south side. You then get to see the actors moving in the said direction. How do they know?
The popular tv series 24 starring Jack Bauer made use if these directions to the point where I was totally confused. Inside a tall building you are told to head South. Then turn North East!
Is there a special training to help you instantly know you heading regardless of which direction you are facing?
