Jiming Jiang is a professor and chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Davis. He is one of the world’s most influential figures in small-area estimation, with fundamental contributions to mixed-effects models, model selection, optimal empirical prediction (OBP), and asymptotic theory. The author of more than 100 articles and seminal books in the field (including *Linear and Generalized Linear Mixed Models and Their Applications*), he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. In 2024, he received the international award for Outstanding Contribution to Small-Area Estimation—the highest global recognition in this field—at a conference held in Lima, Peru.
Thuan Nguyen is an associate professor of biostatistics at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health (Oregon Health & Science University), where she teaches and mentors graduate students in biostatistics, offering courses in Linear Models and Survey Design and Analysis. Her research focuses on mixed-effects models, statistical genetics, model selection, small-area estimation, and longitudinal data analysis. Together with Jiming Jiang, she is the co-author of key contributions to the field, such as optimal empirical prediction (OBP) and its extension to count data, as well as recent work on practical measures of the mean squared prediction error in small areas, published in top-tier journals such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Her work combines methodological rigor with real-world applications in public health, establishing her as a leading figure in the field.
